The interaction of terahertz (THz) radiation with high-frequency spin resonances in complex magnetic materials is central for modern ultrafast magnonics. Here we demonstrate strong variations of the excitation efficiency of the sub-THz exchange magnon in a single crystal ferrimagnet (Gd,Bi)$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$. An enhancement of the exchange magnon amplitude is observed when its frequency matches an eigenmode of the cavity created by the sample interfaces. Moreover, this enhancement is accompanied by a 5-fold decrease in effective damping of the exchange mode. The THz-exchange magnon interaction in the cavity is analyzed within the developed Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert formalism for three coupled magnetization sublattices and cavity-enhanced THz field. This work presents a novel approach for the THz excitation of spin dynamics in ferrimagnets and outlines promising pathways for the controlled optimization of light-spin coupling in single crystals.

Contemporary quantum plasmonics capture subtle corrections to the properties of plasmonic nano-objects in equilibrium. Here, we demonstrate nonequilibrium spill-out redistribution of the electronic density at the ultrafast time scale. As revealed by time-resolved 2D spectroscopy of nanoplasmonic Fe/Au bilayers, an injection of the laser-excited non-thermal electrons induces transient electron spill-out thus changing the plasma frequency. The response of the local electronic density switches the electronic density behavior from spill-in to strong (an order of magnitude larger) spill-out at the femtosecond time scale. The superdiffusive transport of hot electrons and the lack of a direct laser heating indicate significantly non-thermal origin of the underlying physics. Our results demonstrate an ultrafast and non-thermal way to control surface plasmon dispersion through transient variations of the spatial electron distribution at the nanoscale. These findings expand quantum plasmonics into previously unexplored directions by introducing ultrashort time scales in the non-equilibrium electronic systems.

We present experimental and computational findings of the laser-induced non-reciprocal motion of magnetization during ultrafast photo-magnetic switching in garnets. We found distinct coherent magnetization precession trajectories and switching times between four magnetization states, depending on both directions of the light linear polarization and initial magnetic state. As a fingerprint of the topological symmetry, the choice of the switching trajectory is governed by an interplay of the photo-magnetic torque and magnetic anisotropy. Our results open a plethora of possibilities for designing energy-efficient magnetization switching routes at arbitrary energy landscapes.

The Barnett effect, discovered more than a century ago, describes how an inertial body with otherwise zero net magnetic moment acquires spontaneous magnetization when mechanically spinning. Breakthrough experiments have recently shown that an ultrashort laser pulse destroys the magnetization of an ordered ferromagnet within hundreds of femtoseconds, with the spins losing angular momentum to circularly-polarized optical phonons as part of the ultrafast Einstein-de Haas effect. However, the prospect of using such high-frequency vibrations of the lattice to reciprocally switch magnetization in a nearby magnetic medium has not yet been experimentally explored. Here we show that the spontaneous magnetization temporarily gained via the ultrafast Barnett effect, through the resonant excitation of circularly-polarized optical phonons in paramagnetic substrates, can be used to permanently reverse the magnetic state of the substrate-mounted heterostructure. With the handedness of the phonons steering the direction of magnetic switching, the ultrafast Barnett effect offers a selective and potentially universal method for exercising ultrafast non-local control over magnetic order.

We analyze, both experimentally and numerically, the nonlinear regime of the photo-induced coherent magnetization dynamics in cobalt-doped yttrium iron garnet films. Photo-magnetic excitation with femtosecond laser pulses reveals a strongly nonlinear response of the spin subsystem with a significant increase of the effective Gilbert damping. By varying both laser fluence and the external magnetic field, we show that this nonlinearity originates in the anharmonicity of the magnetic energy landscape. We numerically map the parameter workspace for the nonlinear photo-induced spin dynamics below the photo-magnetic switching threshold. Corroborated by numerical simulations of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, our results highlight the key role of the cubic symmetry of the magnetic subsystem in reaching the nonlinear spin precession regime. These findings expand the fundamental understanding of laser-induced nonlinear spin dynamics as well as facilitate the development of applied photo-magnetism.

The PSSWs are excited by optically generated ultrashort spin current pulses, and probed optically in the time domain. Analyzing the wavenumber and thickness dependence of the damping, we demonstrate that at sufficiently large wave vectors $k$ the damping is dominated by spin transport effects scaling with k^4 and limiting the frequency range of observable PSSWs. Although this contribution is known to originate in the spin diffusion, we argue that at moderate and large k a more general description is necessary and develop a model where the 'transverse spin mean free path' is the a key parameter, and estimate it to be ~0.5 nm.

Using ultrashort spin current pulses we excite perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSW) in ultrathin epitaxial iron layers at frequencies of up to 2.4 THz. Our analysis shows that for the PSSWs the observed exchange stiffness of iron is about 20% smaller compared to the established iron bulk value. In addition, we find an interface-related reduction of the effective exchange stiffness for layers with the thickness below 10 nm. To understand and discuss the possible mechanisms of the exchange stiffness reduction we develop an analytical 1D-model. In doing so we find that the interface induced reduction of the exchange stiffness is mode-dependent.

Metallic nanostructures exhibit strong nonlinear-optical response at surface plasmon resonances, where the light-matter coupling efficiency is enhanced. An active modulation of this response can be realized by means of an external magnetic field. Here we utilize a nonlinear magneto-refractive effect in spintronic multilayer antennas to achieve a resonant 20\% modulation in second harmonic generation (SHG) in the mid-infrared. We discuss mechanisms of this modulation and show that it cannot be explained by an unequal enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the two spin states of the multilayer. Instead, we propose a novel contribution to the nonlinear susceptibility, which relies on the spin-dependent electron mean free path in metals. In contrast to magneto-optics in ferromagnets, our approach results in no shift of the resonance and thus ensures that the largest SHG and its strongest modulation are simultaneously observed.

Developing a kinetic model where both local and non-local electron relaxation in metals are included, we identify relevant timescales and extend the existing non-equilibrium electron dynamics framework onto the case of collective electronic excitations. The experimental data obtained in two distinct series of pump-probe measurements (with varied pump wavelength and angle of incidence) demonstrate SP-driven, one order of magnitude enhanced efficiency of the hot electron generation and the fourfold (up to 200 fs) slowdown of their non-local relaxation at the SP resonance. We discuss the perspectives of the SP-enabled manipulation of the non-equilibrium electron population lying at the crossover of photonics and ultrafast spintronics.

Linear and nonlinear magneto-photonic properties of periodic arrays of nickel nanodimers are governed by the interplay of the (local) optical response of individual nanoparticles and (non-local) diffraction phenomena, with a striking example of Wood's anomaly. Angular and magnetic-field dependencies of the second harmonic intensity evidence Wood's anomaly when new diffraction orders emerge. Near-infrared spectroscopic measurements performed at different optical wavelengths and grating constants discriminate between the linear and nonlinear excitation mechanisms of Wood's anomalies. In the nonlinear regime the Wood's anomaly is characterized by an order-of-magnitude larger effect in intensity redistribution between the diffracted beams, as compared to the linear case. The nonlinear Wood's anomaly manifests itself also in the nonlinear magnetic contrast highlighting the prospects of nonlinear magneto-photonics.

We demonstrate a novel method for the excitation of sizable magneto-optical effects in Au by means of the laser-induced injection of hot spin-polarized electrons in Au/Fe/MgO(001) heterostructures. It is based on the energy- and spin-dependent electron transmittance of Fe/Au interface which acts as a spin filter for non-thermalized electrons optically excited in Fe. We show that after crossing the interface, majority electrons propagate through the Au layer with the velocity on the order of 1 nm/fs (close to the Fermi velocity) and the decay length on the order of 100 nm. Featuring ultrafast functionality and requiring no strong external magnetic fields, spin injection results in a distinct magneto-optical response of Au. We develop a formalism based on the phase of the transient complex MOKE response and demonstrate its robustness in a plethora of experimental and theoretical MOKE studies on Au, including our ab initio calculations. Our work introduces a flexible tool to manipulate magneto-optical properties of metals on the femtosecond timescale that holds high potential for active magneto-photonics, plasmonics, and spintronics.

We experimentally investigate second harmonic generation from strongly coupled localized and propagative phonon polariton modes in arrays of silicon carbide nanopillars. Our results clearly demonstrate the hybrid nature of the system's eigenmodes and distinct manifestation of strong coupling in the linear and nonlinear response. While in linear reflectivity the intensity of the two strongly-coupled branches is essentially symmetric and well explained by their respective localized or propagative components, the second harmonic signal presents a strong asymmetry. Analyzing it in detail, we reveal the importance of interference effects between the nonlinear polarization terms originating in the bulk and in the phonon polariton modes, respectively.

Surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) - the surface-bound electromagnetic modes of a polar material resulting from the coupling of light with optic phonons - offer immense technological opportunities for nanophotonics in the infrared (IR) spectral region. Here, we present a novel approach to overcome the major limitation of SPhPs, namely the narrow, material-specific spectral range where SPhPs can be supported, called the Reststrahlen band. We use an atomic-scale superlattice (SL) of two polar semiconductors, GaN and AlN, to create a hybrid material featuring layer thickness-tunable optic phonon modes. As the IR dielectric function is governed by the optic phonon behavior, such control provides a means to create a new dielectric function distinct from either constituent material and to tune the range over which SPhPs can be supported. This work offers the first glimpse of the guiding principles governing the degree to which the dielectric function can be designed using this approach.

Implementing the action of a femtosecond spin current pulse entering an orthogonally magnetized thin ferromagnetic film, we reproduce recent experimental results and reveal the factors responsible for the unequal excitation efficiency of various spin waves. Our findings are in an excellent agreement with the results of an analytical description of spin-wave excitation based on classical kinetic equations. Furthermore, we suggest an experimental design allowing for the excitation of laterally propagating spin waves beyond the optical diffraction limit. Our findings demonstrate that the classical micromagnetic picture retains its predictive and interpretative power on femtosecond temporal and nanometer spatial scales.

Understanding the transfer of spin angular momentum is essential in modern magnetism research. A model case is the generation of magnons in magnetic insulators by heating an adjacent metal film. Here, we reveal the initial steps of this spin Seebeck effect with <27fs time resolution using terahertz spectroscopy on bilayers of ferrimagnetic yttrium-iron garnet and platinum. Upon exciting the metal with an infrared laser pulse, a spin Seebeck current $j_\textrm{s}$ arises on the same ~100fs time scale on which the metal electrons thermalize. This observation highlights that efficient spin transfer critically relies on carrier multiplication and is driven by conduction electrons scattering off the metal-insulator interface. Analytical modeling shows that the electrons' dynamics are almost instantaneously imprinted onto $j_\textrm{s}$ because their spins have a correlation time of only ~4fs and deflect the ferrimagnetic moments without inertia. Applications in material characterization, interface probing, spin-noise spectroscopy and terahertz spin pumping emerge.

We experimentally demonstrate second harmonic generation due to the optical field enhancement from critically coupled surface phonon polaritons at the 6H-SiC-air interface, employing an infrared free-electron laser for intense, tunable, and narrowband mid-infrared excitation. Critical coupling to the surface polaritons is achieved using a prism in the Otto geometry with adjustable width of the air gap, providing full control over the excitation conditions along the polariton dispersion. We study the effects of crystal anisotropy on optical phonon resonances in the second harmonic generation (SHG) from silicon carbide (SiC) in its Reststrahl region. By comparing experiments and simulations for isotropic 3C-SiC and anisotropic 4H-SiC in two crystal cuts, we identify several pronounced effects in the nonlinear response which arise solely from the crystal anisotropy. Specifically, we demonstrate that the axial and planar transverse optical phonon resonances selectively and exclusively appear in the corresponding tensor elements of the nonlinear susceptibility, enabling observation of an intense SHG peak originating from a weak phonon mode due to zone-folding along the c-axis of 4H-SiC. Similarly, we identify an anisotropy factor $ζ\equiv ε_\perp/ε_\parallel$ responsible for a steep enhancement of the transmitted fundamental fields at the axial longitudinal optical phonon frequency, resulting in strongly enhanced SHG. We develop a general recipe to extract all these features that is directly applicable to all wurtzite-structure polar dielectrics, where a very similar behavior is expected. Our model study illustrates the opportunities for utilizing the crystal anisotropy for selectively enhancing nonlinear-optical effects in polar dielectrics, which could potentially be extended to built-in anisotropy in artificially designed hybrid materials.

Their temporal profile indicates that superdiffusive hot electron transport across a sub-100~nm Au layer is close to the ballistic limit and the pulse duration is primarily determined by the thermalization time of laser-excited hot carriers in Fe. Considering the calculated spin-dependent Fe/Au interface transmittance we conclude that a non-thermal spin-dependent Seebeck effect is responsible for the generation of ultrashort SC pulses. We also show that hot electron spins rotate upon interaction with non-collinear magnetization at the Au/Fe interface, which holds high potential for future spintronic devices.

Spintronics had a widespread impact over the past decades due to transferring information by spin rather than electric currents. Its further development requires miniaturization and reduction of characteristic timescales of spin dynamics combining the sub-nanometer spatial and femtosecond temporal ranges. These demands shift the focus of interest towards the fundamental open question of the interaction of femtosecond spin current (SC) pulses with a ferromagnet (FM). The spatio-temporal properties of the impulsive spin transfer torque exerted by ultrashort SC pulses on the FM open the time domain for probing non-uniform magnetization dynamics. Here we employ laser-generated ultrashort SC pulses for driving ultrafast spin dynamics in FM and analyzing its transient local source. Transverse spins injected into FM excite inhomogeneous high-frequency spin dynamics up to 0.6 THz, indicating that the perturbation of the FM magnetization is confined to 2 nm.

We review the recent progress in experimental and theoretical research of interactions between the acoustic, magnetic and plasmonic transients in hybrid metal-ferromagnet multilayer structures excited by ultrashort laser pulses. The main focus is on understanding the nonlinear aspects of the acoustic dynamics in materials as well as the peculiarities in the nonlinear optical and magneto-optical response. For example, the nonlinear optical detection is illustrated in details by probing the static magneto-optical second harmonic generation in gold-cobalt-silver trilayer structures in Kretschmann geometry. Furthermore, we show experimentally how the nonlinear reshaping of giant ultrashort acoustic pulses propagating in gold can be quantified by time-resolved plasmonic interferometry and how these ultrashort optical pulses dynamically modulate the optical nonlinearities. The effective medium approximation for the optical properties of hybrid multilayers facilitates the understanding of novel optical detection techniques. In the discussion we highlight recent works on the nonlinear magneto-elastic interactions, and strain-induced effects in semiconductor quantum dots.

A time domain approach to probe hot carrier-induced spin dynamics is demonstrated. The experiments are performed in epitaxial Au/Fe/MgO(001), where spin-polarized hot carriers are excited in the Fe layer by 35 fs laser pulses. They propagate to the Au surface where the transient spin polarization is detected by magneto-induced second harmonic generation. Different energies of majority and minority hot carriers excited in the exchange-split Fe band structure lead to their spindependent lifetimes in Au. Accordingly, two spin-polarized current contributions which propagate superdiffusively at different velocities result in a spin current pulse of about 100 fs duration.
