LENS SIMULATION
Leica LUX brings the world of Leica to your iPhone by imitating a variety of legendary Leica lenses. You can explore the unique world of Leica lenses, each offering its own image style. Lens simulations include classics – such as the Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 ASPH. and the Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH. – the app is continuously being expanded to include additional lenses. The custom software engine also creates bokeh quality images, a style synonymous with Leica photography, directly in your iPhone.
ICONIC LEICA LOOKS
Leica LUX is based on Leica's own renowned colour science and offers the same colour corrections and film presets used in Leica cameras. These include Leica Looks such as Leica Classic, Leica Contemporary, Leica Black & White and Leica Vivid. Ratings and Reviews
Like the color effects, hate the price.
I really like Leica color but $70 a year for ( basically) color looks seems extreme. Almost all apps have gone insane. Remember when an app like this would be 99 cents, it was yours,and they'd update it for years before asking for a upgrade fee? Yes, this app does color well and yes it simulates focal lengths ( lenses) pretty well but I just can't get over how little they're giving for the price. Oh wait, it's a " Leica" branded product....but wait..it's just an iPhone...hmmmmm
The Price of Bliss
Now 70 and retired, Leica entered my life as a photojournalist at age 15 (good to have family in graphic arts). I've sold the farm many times in my life to get the "next-to-latest" Leica gear that could get me to the next level. A few years ago I discovered the Q, now have a Q2. It was worth the wait and the thousands. Smartphone photography, while ideal for capturing moments when you have nothing else to shoot with (the best camera is the one you have ready to use at the moment the moment arrives), but despite mind blowing technology advances, still produce mostly unremarkable images. That fine line between a great composition of a great subject or scene and a true work of art is subtle. This app bridges that undefinable void. Open the app, leave the aperture wide open, turn the Look to Leica Vivid, choose a wide lens so you can immerse your senses in the image, focus on the key subject and tap. Enlarge on the phone and absorb the beautifully perfect rendition, not of what you see, but of what you were envisioning in your mind. Life captured as art. Yes, the sparkly new app is buggy. Yes, it costs a king's ransom to lease (you never "own" it). But wow does it ever reward with satisfaction only bested by using the real thing. For capturing head turning images for immediate sharing with others, it simply makes you feel great. Isn't that what photography is all about?
Excellent addition to the Leica World
I am teaching an Environmental Photography college class at SJSU soon, and I am planning on having all students use their iPhone and this app. Perfect tool to understand aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, focal length,… without having them to buy a “bulky” camera (it is a quote from one of the student!). On my iPhone 15 Pro Max the results are in line (visually) with my own Leica M11 and the Summilux lenses. The big difference is when you zoom in, huge gap in resolution and overall definition. But, that is an iPhone limitation. Thanks Leica for bringing innovative photography tools to us, and the youngest photographers.
