The instant New York Times bestseller.

From Microsoft's president and one of the tech industry's broadest thinkers, a frank and thoughtful reckoning with how to balance enormous promise and existential risk as the digitization of everything accelerates.

“A colorful and insightful insiders’ view of how technology is both empowering and threatening us. From privacy to cyberattacks, this timely book is a useful guide for how to navigate the digital future.” —Walter Isaacson

Microsoft President Brad Smith operates by a simple core belief: When your technology changes the world, you bear a responsibility to help address the world you have helped create. This might seem uncontroversial, but it flies in the face of a tech sector long obsessed with rapid growth and sometimes on disruption as an end in itself. While sweeping digital transformation holds great promise, we have reached an inflection point. The world has turned information technology into both a powerful tool and a formidable weapon, and new approaches are needed to manage an era defined by even more powerful inventions like artificial intelligence. Companies that create technology must accept greater responsibility for the future, and governments will need to regulate technology by moving faster and catching up with the pace of innovation.

In
Tools and Weapons, Brad Smith and Carol Ann Browne bring us a captivating narrative from the cockpit of one of the world's largest and most powerful tech companies as it finds itself in the middle of some of the thorniest emerging issues of our time. These are challenges that come with no preexisting playbook, including privacy, cybercrime and cyberwar, social media, the moral conundrums of artificial intelligence, big tech's relationship to inequality, and the challenges for democracy, far and near. While in no way a self-glorifying "Microsoft memoir," the book pulls back the curtain remarkably wide onto some of the company's most crucial recent decision points as it strives to protect the hopes technology offers against the very real threats it also presents. There are huge ramifications for communities and countries, and Brad Smith provides a thoughtful and urgent contribution to that effort.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A clear, compelling guide to some of the most pressing debates in technology today.” —Bill Gates, from the foreword

“Taming Big Tech will not be easy, but this book . . . shows where to start.”
—The Financial Times

“Smith’s book is not the typical vanity project churned out by so many Fortune 500 leaders, the generic tomes on leadership and teamwork stocked at airport bookstores near the neck pillows.
Tools and Weapons is a glimpse behind the curtain as Microsoft reckoned with the Snowden revelations, defended against the vicious cyberattacks, and took both the Obama and Trump administrations to court.” —Rolling Stone

“‘When your technology changes the world,’ writes Smith, ‘you bear a responsibility to help address the world you have helped create.’ In
Tools and Weapons, Smith and co-author Carol Ann Browne, make a persuasive, pragmatic case for owning that responsibility, in everything from digital privacy and surveillance to cybersecurity and social fragmentation to artificial intelligence and facial-recognition technology.” —Seattle Times

“Casual readers who know Microsoft primarily for Windows, Office and maybe Xbox will be surprised by the level of insight Smith brings to some of the biggest issues facing not just the industry but humanity. [
Tools and Weapons] is written for a mass market, not just tech and policy wonks. It offers a framework for everyday readers to understand and think about the implications of powerful new forms of technology. . . . It’s full of behind-the-scenes anecdotes, from internal Microsoft meetings to high-level sessions at the Obama and Trump White Houses. It makes ample use of historical references to put modern trends and technologies in context.” —GeekWire

“Coming from an industry driven by disruption, it’s refreshing to read Brad Smith’s call for the tech sector to assume more responsibility. In
Tools and Weapons, Brad and Carol Ann Browne wrestle with some of the world’s toughest technology challenges with common sense and valuable insight reflecting their inside experience. The ideas in Tools and Weapons won’t solve all our problems, but they’re a very good place to start.” —Reed Hastings, CEO, Netflix

“At a time when many leaders in tech want to avoid a discussion of the social, economic, and security ramifications of the products they’ve built, it’s refreshing to see Brad Smith step up, urge the industry to take action, and acknowledge the need for smart regulation. This book offers an excellent encapsulation of some of the biggest challenges facing technologists, policymakers, and users alike.”
—Senator Mark Warner

"
Tools and Weapons reads like a techno-legal thriller, yet offers a thorough and eye-opening account of the major tech controversies of the last decade, from NSA spying through AI ethics and the US-China standoff. Brad Smith, a believer that 'great power brings great responsibility' makes it evident that the future of humanity may depend on ethical and responsive leadership in the tech industries, and in this book he sets a high bar for his peers." —Tim Wu, author of The Curse of Bigness

“This is a colorful and insightful insiders’ view of how technology is both empowering and threatening us. From privacy to cyberattacks, this timely book is a useful guide for how to navigate the digital future.”
—Walter Isaacson, bestselling author of The Innovators and Steve Jobs

“Perhaps more than any industry leader, Brad Smith understands that technology is a double-edged sword—unleashing incredible opportunity but raising profound questions about democracy, civil liberties, the future of work and international relations.
Tools and Weapons tackles these and other questions in a brilliant and accessible manner. It is a timely book that should be read by anyone seeking to understand how we can take advantage of technology’s promise without sacrificing our freedom, privacy or security.” —Former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright

“With clarity and candor, Brad Smith and Carol Ann Browne have crafted an indispensable guide to understanding and tackling the mightiest tech challenges of our time. Drawing on firsthand experience as well as the lessons of history, this perceptive volume shows that solutions will not be solely governmental nor corporate, but must involve collaboration across sectors and borders. Timely, essential reading for all who care about where the tech world goes next.”
—Margaret O’Mara, author of The Code

“Brad Smith has emerged as a vocal and principled thought leader addressing how technology can either help uphold or undermine human rights. As digital technology continues to proliferate, these issues will only grow in importance and command more of the world’s attention.”
—Amal Clooney, international human rights lawyer and co-founder and president, Clooney Foundation for Justice

Love them or hate them, Microsoft has been at the leading edge of technology since long before the dawn of the Internet era. Brad Smith has compiled a uniquely realistic take on our times here - a book filled with fear, dread, hope, inspiration, and a clear path forward if we're to survive the technological terrors we've unleashed on ourselves these past couple of decades. He's also keenly aware that our enemy is NOT technology, but rather our own destructive tendencies. I highly recommend this book for anyone curious about where we've been and where we're heading when it comes to the digital age.

What I like about this book:
1. As the CLO of Microsoft, Brad brings a new perspective on many topics. Most of the tech companies' CEOs and authors talk about things in their very "Silicon Valley-ish" way, focusing too much on the tech, business, and "make the world a better place" mindset. Brad, however, frequently meets policy maker from D.C. and top leaders of other countries. He talks about the legislative and political difficulties involved in these problems.
2. Brad Smith uses about 20 pages to talk about each topic. It's the right length - deep enough to help you understand the real debates and hurdles behind some of the buzz words we hear everyday, e.g. cyber security, but not too long to start becoming tedious.

What I don't like:
This whole book is bragging about Microsoft. This includes two problems:
1. Brad only talks about the positive efforts that Microsoft made, but almost no mistakes and criticism it's facing. Without those, how can we truly understand both sides of a challenge?
2. Brad only talks about what Microsoft did, but seldom gives credit to other companies, unless what they did is joining an initiative that Microsoft led. Without this, how can we have a comprehensive view of the whole industry's effort?
So a more accurate title of this book should be "Tools and Weapons - Why is Microsoft a great company for the future of human kind".

Brad covers thorny issues Microsoft found itself in at the intersection of technology, government regulation, and society: Data privacy, use cases of AI/ML, ecological impacts of cloud computing, cybersecurity, …

My first thought is this book would be filled with Microsoft propaganda. I was pleasantly surprised! Well researched and provacatively written. Brad and Carol put forward a path into the future based on historical realities of the past. Read this and become part of the future to help ensure advanced cloud, AI & VR is used to create new and better tools, not new and better weapons.

The technologies that we use every day didn't appear out of nowhere. They were built by people who made decision after decision. All too often, those decisions are quite opaque to people on the outside and yet these decisions have significant implications for all of us. What makes this book special is that the President of Microsoft (Brad Smith) and his colleague (Carol Ann Browne) invite readers to go with them on a journey through a handful of issues that present both business and ethical challenges. They describe different encounters that shape their thinking and then lay out various trade-offs that they're navigating. As an employee of Microsoft Research, I'm grateful for this public accounting. While I don't agree with every decision that they have made, I deeply respect the thought and consideration that go into those decisions. And I'm delighted to see that put on display for employees, customers, and users. The executive leadership of Microsoft are systematically and intentionally aiming to prioritize social responsibility and ethical decision-making as pillars in the company's transformation. This book offers a window into this process. My hope is that other technology leaders will start to share their thinking as well.

This book presented an insider view of the political and legal issues facing the technology sector, and highlighted some of the initiatives Microsoft is engaging in to address them. When discussing ethical and political issues, bias is inevitable, but I felt that the authors made a sincere effort to represent themselves and their competitors fairly, and were more or less charitably disposed to different views on the topics they discussed. At times, Microsoft is depicted as the hero, but Smith and Browne take care to highlight the positive contributions of their competitors. In fact, there were several places in the book where I felt that the authors, in their effort to remain diplomatic, were too careful in their rhetoric, causing their arguments to lose some of their force.

The writing style is very approachable, but becomes a little formulaic as the book wears on. Each chapter begins as a personal or historical anecdote, which the authors use to illustrate a particular technology issue. They then use this as a segue into what Microsoft has done to address the particular issue in focus, and what remains to be done across the industry. In this sense, the book is much more pragmatic than philosophical. The authors don't just call out the issues; they put forward their ideas for solutions. And while the proposed solutions may be light on details, they are there for discussion.

All in all, I would say this book is worth the read for anyone who is interested in a broad overview of the legal and political landscape of the technology industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tools and Weapons is a fitting tribute to the "Digital Decade"

This was truly the "Digital Decade".

2010-2019 - we witnessed probably the biggest paradigm shifts, device explosion, 2g to 5g, Data Democratization, API, AI, ML, Open Banking, Cloud Native, Voice Assistants, IoT.

We lost Steve Jobs.

We debated ethics and morals - Cambridge Analytica, Snowden, Theranos, Facebook episodes. We talked GDPR, Compliance, Data Protection, DevOps, Containerization. I am so excited about the next decade and how hyper digital its going to be.

Tools and Weapons, by Brad Smith one of the top reads of this year and probably the most apt one as we close this Digital Decade. Thanks Brad Smith and Carol Ann Browne for this.
