Fantastic device, only OK native ereader app
5 out of 5 stars
Fantastic device, only OK native ereader app
Had the device for a week, been reading a lot. It's an all around fantastic device. Good user controls, easy setup and navigation, crisp screen image, responsive and reliable screen (Note: I don't use the stylus). I've installed a few sideloaded apps, and a couple Lite apps from Google Play, each worked well. I have very little to complain about...Pros (mostly obvious):- Battery life is awesome while just reading eBooks (maybe lose 5% a day), not sure about with other use.- High res screen is definitely nicer than my gen3 Kindle Keyboard, which was a-okay too.- Running Android opens up a word of possibilities for modifying and troubleshooting the device, vs more closed source proprietary eReader OSes (Note: I've had no OS issues myself).- Ability to read any pretty much any format or branding of eBook is a massive benefit (some only via 3rd party app, but still can be read; library book, kindle books, google play, kobo, you name it, a BOOX device can probably can handle it)!Con (so far):- Built in book reader (Neo Reader?) is not 100% functional: I've had it crash a couple times, reading a very basic ePub; It doesn't appear to display Horizontal Rules (a basic HTML Tag, often used for scene breaks); It's added or removed pagebreaks a couple of times, where it shouldn't have; And It also occasionally and randomly left-aligns chapter headers (centered h3 tags) and center aligns a paragraph here or there (often with extra padding above and below, like it's a chapter heading), even though the eBooks native CSS and the readers formatting are set to 'justify with indent', no paragraph spacing, and padding for centered chapter headings. The formatting glitches are a really strange error, the eBook HTML and CSS code is all correct, and closing and reopening the eBook in the BOOX native reading app fixes the errors, every time (see attached photos for an examples)!People have suggested installing and using Moon+ Reader or FBReader and setting them as default readers for whatever file formats are appropriate, and I'll probably switch to Moon+ Reader eventually myself. I own the Pro version of the app, and have used it on my phones and tablets for many years. Doing so should remedy the weird formatting glitches, as well as provide other resources and options. But for now I'm still gonna test out the built in a reader for a bit longer.

I love this. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not perfect, but it still gets 5 stars from me because I’ve tried so many devices and this is by far my favorite. I wanted a device that I could use to take notes primarily. Being able to get my kindle books, WSJ and local paper are bonuses that I enjoy.

I tried reMarkable. It has a cult following and is supposedly the best note taker out there. I didn’t agree. It’s too big. I take notes in executive meeting, the Nova Pro is the size of the Moleskine notebooks I used, much more comfortable for me. The pen is white... mine was so gross so fast. I wash my hands constantly, but apparently not enough. Eww. It also has no other functionality. This is by design, trying to keep people focused, but that isn't really a concern of mine. I'm not that easily distracted.

I tried a Likebook Muses. This seemed to have it all, too, but the 1st one never turned on and the 2nd froze so often I had to bring a notebook as a backup. It was early so they might improve but I’m not patient enough to wait around

Some of the things I love about the Boox Nova Pro:
- the pen has an eraser function when you flip it. It’s like a real pencil
- the feel is great to me. The reMarkable definitely had that scratchy pencil feel which was really cool, but I’ve found writing on my Nova Pro to be very comfortable and natural.
- the glare is minimal. I couldn't see using an iPad for that reason. I love my kindle honestly if Amazon came out with a kindle I could take notes on, I would buy it immediately
- shapes and lines are nice to use every now and then in notes and look way better than if I drew them myself. the reMarkable didn't have this ability, which I didn't think I needed, but love now that I have it
- it is extremely easy to add new templates. I like more narrow lines than they had built in, so I made a quick template in ppt and uploaded it as a pdf. I found a final season Game of Thrones death pool, so I uploaded it and documented my guesses
- when I have an agenda or document I want to take notes on, I’ve found that I prefer to upload it into my template folder and use it in a notebook. This helps me keep everything in the notes app, which I use the most

Some of the not so great things:
- Apps lag, but it’s not their fault. Apps aren’t made for eInk yet. It takes a lot of tweaking to get the kindle working but it works. Not ideal, but since my priority was notes, I don't mind that much and still use them
- the case is separate. Makes this a more expensive option but it’s worth getting. I would definitely lose the pen if I didn't have the case
- I can’t personalize the home screen. The home screen is the library, but I’d much rather it show my most recently used notes and apps. I don't have a lot of documents in my library, but I would imagine someone annotating a lot of PDFs may.
- the writing to text converts my handwriting ok, but in such a mess that I don’t bother. It doesn’t recognize line spacing so everything is jumbled together

I definitely haven’t tried everything it can do, but I enjoy it. If you're considering a note taking device, I really think this one is the best value

If you are looking for an eReader that has a good PDF support, look no further. Boox native reader is the best PDF support in class. It is also very light, pretty easy to hold. Note taking is excellence, very responsive.

Since it is an android device (6.0), it supports all kind of eReader, including Kindle, Libby (aka OverDrive), pdf, comic, epub, etc. All you need is enable Google Play store and install the app that you needed. The default eReader comes with the device is one of the best. Flexible and easy to use and responsive. However, the performance of third-party readers is sluggish. Turn page is not responsive. Sometimes I have to try multiple time to get a page to turn. It could be the optimization issue of the third-party software with the device touch screen. The page get reflash often in normal mode, and a lot better in A2 mode. It is an acceptable residue. In the web browser, you can not adjust contrast, the content is somewhat difficult to read.

Overall, I am not impressed with the performance of the device. Since my main source of books are Kindle and Libby, I do need to use third-party apps. The experience is not good. I suggest you go with a good old 8" android pad, unless you want the eInk then, this is the one for you.

I've been searching for an eInk device that I can use to comfortably read eBooks and PDFs and that would allow me to use a stylus to mark up my readings (highlighting, notes in margins, etc). This device is the best I've found but still does not quite meet my needs. I ordered it after trying reMarkable and finding the PDF reading capabilities severely lacking.

Pros: Love the size, I can fairly comfortably read a full-page PDF on this device, although the zooming features work adequately well that it's relatively painless to zoom if needed. Perfect for reading Ebooks in landscape mode. You can doodle all over PDFs to your heart's content, then save your results as a new PDF for easy export and review on other devices. Love the front-light with separate warm and cool lighting options.

Cons: Not Adobe DRM enabled, therefore cannot read borrowed library books on this device with the native reader app. You can install Kindle or other apps for this purpose, however I found the Kindle app to be annoyingly buggy on this device (as in, it's hard to get the page to turn reliably--super frustrating). Cannot highlight using the stylus on the PDF reader--you can only draw lines of varying thickness. You CAN highlight PDFs using your finger but this is imprecise and clunky. You cannot write in book margins with the native reader app (not sure any device but reMarkable allows this), and although there is a Sidenote feature you can sort of use for this purpose, I found that this is basically just a blank note page opened next to but not in any way associated with the reading field, and that whatever you write in side note does not get associated in any particular way with the text you were reading at the time of writing that note. This is not what I was expecting.

The writing on this device is OK-ish; better than on my Surface Pro but not anywhere near as good as on reMarkable in terms of accuracy, responsiveness, and feel.

Overall, doesn't meet my needs well enough to justify pricetag. Have finally decided to go with the most basic version of iPad gen 6 + apple pen, as when purchased on sale this is a similar price point and will do all the things I need it to do for reading and annotating in a much more flexible way. Now if only it had an eInk screen for more comfortable reading, I'd be all set. I'm afraid the perfect device for my purposes has yet to be invented.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastico (se fa per voi)
Reviewed in Italy on December 20, 2019

Quindi occhio a cosa vi serve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plus qu'une liseuse
Reviewed in France on August 28, 2019
A savoir :

5.0 out of 5 stars Toller Reader
Reviewed in Germany on June 7, 2019

Speicher: Storage - Android - Data - com.mytolino.app - files - oneapp - epub

Ottavia
4.0 out of 5 stars Praticamente perfetto
Reviewed in Italy on February 6, 2020

6) E' possibile regolare luminosità e temperatura colore dello schermo a piacere.

Miglior acquisto dell'anno!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solides Gerät, erfordert etwas Android-Erfahrung
Reviewed in Germany on August 5, 2019
