Many have asked me if I am founding an AI startup. And the answer is, yes, kind of, but different. Rana el Kaliouby, Ph.D. and I are starting a venture firm that will invest in AI startups. We are just a few months into this, so it’s very early days and it will be some time before we are ready to deploy capital, but we are moving fast. We are starting Blue Tulip Ventures, a venture firm that will invest in early stage startups building Human Centric AI – AI that is good for you, good for the planet and ethical. So why this move into venture capital? I have worked as an operator in 8 different startups and have been a CMO and head of product for a long time. I am ready to do something different. I like to innovate and build technologies, products, teams, ecosystems, markets. I have always mentored startups and recently also invested as an angel and as Core LP Underscore VC. I have been doing advisory work for BY Venture Partners, one of the awesome investors of Affectiva, and we are now exploring ways Blue Tulip can collaborate with BY and complement their new fund’s core strategy. I realize that as an investor I can build at scale, by backing a lot of startups and supporting them in their growth. In speaking with Rana about her track record as an investor, it became clear that we wanted to do the same thing and had an opportunity to work together again. We are truly thought partners and complement each other, but above all we are aligned on the future we see for AI. • We believe AI will be transformative and offer massive economic opportunity, but it has to be done right. • We believe AI needs to be in service of humanity, supporting us to be healthier, happier, more productive and connected, enhancing what it means to be human in the age of AI. • We believe AI can help protect our planet, through food innovation and sustainable food systems, address the impact of climate change and power scientific discovery. • We believe AI needs to be developed and used ethically, ensuring it does not cause harm to humans or the planet, and that it is transparent and safe with proper governance. We have conviction that the answer is human-centric AI. AI that puts people and the planet we live on first. And, we want to invest in and build diverse teams and ideas, as we fundamentally believe that diversity fosters innovation and mitigates bias and injustice. So why the Blue Tulip? The extraordinary blue tulip is rare and elusive in nature – a unicorn. It signifies creativity and uniqueness. At Blue Tulip Ventures, we invest in hard-to-find early-stage startups that build human-centric #AI, and we celebrate them with the blue tulip because they are unlike anyone else and inspire us. I am excited to embark on another AI adventure with Rana. And, with many others. Success in VC is all about networks and ecosystems. Wow, this article on Pitchbook caught my eye. Generative AI is having a moment in the Middle East, and it's not surprising! There's been a massive surge in VC deals for generative AI startups, and it's clear that the region is emerging as a major player in this space. Think about it, government support is booming, and businesses and consumers alike are chomping at the bit to adopt this new tech. It's a perfect storm for innovation. Saudi Arabia's $40 billion AI fund is a great example - that kind of cash injection is sure to accelerate development. The UAE is also going big with their council for AI innovation. I'm really excited to see how this trend continues to unfold. The Middle East has the potential to become a global hub for generative AI, and it will be fascinating to see what kind of groundbreaking applications emerge from the region. #generativeAI #AI #MiddleEast

As you may know, I recently joined the Sanabil 500 MENA accelerator program as a first-time founder of Octa. Just had my pitch on Demo Day last night, and - what an experience! 🚀 I wanted to share some of my learnings with you all and thought I can inspire someone who is also a first-time founder! 🌟 Key Learnings: ☑ Embrace the learning curve ☑ Build a strong network ☑ Stay resilient and adaptable ☑ Take initiative ☑ Celebrate small wins Embrace the learning curve Being a first-time founder is like riding a roller coaster with no seatbelt. There’s so much to learn every single day. I’ve realized it’s totally okay not to know everything. Staying curious, asking tons of questions, and learning from everyone around me has been key. Build a strong network The support from the Sanabil 500 MENA community has been amazing. Connecting with mentors, fellow founders, and investors has given me so much guidance and encouragement. Seriously, building a strong network is like having a superpower. Building strong relationships is key as the majority of these are driven by trust. Stay resilient and adaptable I have been doing this only for the last 4 months but I can really attest that startups are a wild ride with lots of ups and downs. Staying resilient and adaptable has helped me keep going. Focusing on the big picture and being ready to iterate when things don’t go as planned is so important. Take Initiative Being proactive is everything. Whether it’s seeking feedback, trying out new ideas, or tackling problems head-on, taking the first step has always led to progress. Don’t wait, just do it! Celebrate small wins Startup life is crazy busy, but celebrating small wins is a must. These little victories keep the team motivated and energized. Starting a venture is no small feat, and as someone who's launched startups in loyalty / health tech, and deep tech social robotics, I’ve learned that execution trumps elaborate strategy every time. The startup landscape in Saudi Arabia is evolving rapidly. In 2020, Saudi Arabia's startup ecosystem saw significant growth, with increased investments and a supportive regulatory environment. This rapid growth means there's no time for overthinking; you need to act fast and smart. Key Ideas for Early-Stage Products: Customer Feedback: Constantly listen to your users. Their feedback is gold. For instance, in our early days, user feedback helped us pivot and refine our product features swiftly. Rapid Prototyping: Build, test, iterate. This was crucial in all my ventures. Quick iterations helped us stay ahead of the curve. Core Functionality: Focus on what matters most. Don’t get distracted by "nice-to-haves." Launch with the core features and expand based on user needs and market demand. Why it Works: In the early days, getting a working product into users' hands and refining it based on real-world feedback is more valuable than a perfectly crafted strategy that never sees the light of day. In Saudi’s fast-paced startup landscape, this approach can make all the difference. Remember, it's about swatting the flies that buzz around daily, not just waiting to slay the dragon.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting a VP from #Temu who was in #Dubai for a day during a layover at DXB. We had lunch together, and I was genuinely surprised and impressed by Temu's operational strategies. The company strictly adheres to a KPI-driven policy, allowing managers to be promoted to directors based on performance, and directors to become senior managers according to the KPIs. Their aggressive approach, inspired by Chinese company PDD, has enabled them to dominate the market. #Temu has set an ambitious sales target of #60_billion_USD for this year, with the #US market expected to contribute $20-25 #billion, accounting for 40% of their total sales. This is a remarkable achievement considering they only launched in the US in September 2022. Their expansion into Europe is equally impressive, with potential sales there surpassing those in the US. I'm looking forward to meeting them again next week at their HQ.
