    "ignore" is maybe too strong, but "protect yourself, don't be distracted, don't waste emotional energy" is along the same lines. @sErlSaNo explicitly says to report actively harmful behaviours up the chain.

  • @Trunk I did not literally mean ignore them. More figuratively - as in don't devote energy or brainspace to worrying about them. BenBolker said it well.

  • Turning the other cheek with hostility doesn't work. It encourages the offenders to up the ante, again and again. There's clearly a leadership vacuum where research ethos and esprit should be. The "eliminate-the-competition" crew twigged to this and the likely implications for the lab PI's professional/personal situation. It's time for a showdown. Otherwise it's death by a thousand cuts for OP.
