Added a relevant information that was unclear.

Oct 16, 2023 at 13:05 comment added Kal8578 Kimball : No, it wasn't in the US (that's why I mentioned "in my country" at the beginning, hoping that it'd imply I am not American and thus my culture might not be OP's culture, but restrospectively it was a bit unclear, sorry about that). Yes, it was higher education, in France. I won't get into long and irrelevant details, but in the public system where I taught, retaking the year upon failure once is a thing (that comes with drawbacks). And imo it is a good thing, since e.g. medical or personal issues can happen and the affected students deserve a second chance.
Oct 16, 2023 at 12:59 comment added Kimball the school council, in which we discussed what to do with the students who failed (allow them to retake the year ? - Is this at a university? If so, what country? Repeating a year doesn't really make sense in a US university system.
Oct 16, 2023 at 10:41 comment added Kal8578 user479223 : nice to see things are working well for you ! user1079505 : I understand your comment, but I don't think I'd be able to come up with such a list that isn't highly incomplete, and I wouldn't want readers to take such a list as (nearly) exhaustive. Actually, this concern was mine back then I was faced with the situation for the first time, and the only solution I came up with was, as explained, to strictly use school-controlled means to interact with the students about the subject. So I prefer not to answer this, instead of giving a misleading answer. Sorry !

Oct 16, 2023 at 0:19 comment added user479223 I actually received several responses and it seemed to have been helpful. Some students had some concrete issues that I tried to address. Others just said they would come to office hours. All of them thanked me.
