Nov 1, 2021 at 14:42 comment added Polyhat @AzorAhai-him- It must not include medical science. President Obama forgave much of the doctors' school loans--it cost at least $30,000+ a year for medical school not too many years back. Is that free now, too? (Maybe I'm behind the times.)
Nov 1, 2021 at 14:39 comment added Azor Ahai -him- In the US, in the sciences, every PhD is paid for (both a stipend and tuition is covered). If you are paying for a PhD in the sciences in the US, you are doing something really wrong.
Nov 1, 2021 at 14:38 comment added Polyhat @AzorAhai-him- If that is the case, where are these free PhD programs? Do you have a link to any? I have never met someone whose university paid for his or her PhD; albeit, it might be the case, especially some years ago, that professors at a university needed to be upgraded and their costs were covered by their employer (back when university professors were more commonly teaching under a master's degree).
Nov 1, 2021 at 14:08 comment added Azor Ahai -him- The idea that US universities prefer students to be there for longer simply isn't true. Master's students pay, but depts pay for PhD students. So purely financially, a PhD completed in four years is cheaper to the dept compared to five. On the other hand, master's students bring in money (but not if they're doing it during the first two years of their PhD).
