Oct 25, 2021 at 9:40 comment added Oneyearleft Advice 1 is in action (we have a few group members per paper and all contribute and iterate actively). Advice 2 will be our next attempt, we try somewhat (please only comment on section X) but this is often ignored as they prefer to restart from intro each time. I will try the extracting method and send / print only the necessary pages. Their successful students are from early career when they were cosupervisor so them having more students has (potentially) reduced our chance of success in academia.
Oct 23, 2021 at 17:15 comment added Buffy @henning, and others, don't forget the phenomenon of death by a thousand cuts. Ten students may just be too many but lots of small things might have intervened to get to that situation.
Oct 23, 2021 at 17:01 comment added user116675 @henning I'm completely with you on these matters. The supervisor may simply be in denial, believing themselves to be competent to fix the situation in the future (against mounting evidence).
Oct 23, 2021 at 16:52 comment added henning no longer feeds AI @Wetenschaap hence the subjunctive. Then again, OP says the supervisor "constantly" misses giving promised feedback, which suggests whatever keeps getting in the way at this point can hardly be "unexpected" anymore. I think 10 PhD students is a lot, by the way.
Oct 23, 2021 at 16:45 comment added user116675 @henning would if be "unethical" for a supervisor to accept a number of PhD students they can handle, only to subsequently be tasked with unexpected time-consuming departmental duties? We do not know the situation that this particular supervisor is in, nor the path that took them there, so I would prefer to withhold judgment.
Oct 23, 2021 at 16:42 comment added henning no longer feeds AI It would be "unethical" (in the sense of not meeting legitimate expectations) for a supervisor to accept more PhD students than she/he can handle. Not being able to communicate honestly about what students/collaborators can expect when is also unprofessional.
