    @ZeroTheHero Yes, it is sometimes possible to leave and then come back again later. However, that requires (at least) two relocations.

  • @avid Well I wasn’t thinking relocation included going for a few years of postdoc but you are technically correct. I’m not 100% convinced of your argument on duplication. If the university runs a center on underwater basket weaving they might well hire their best student to stick around and add to the critical mass. But I think you are generally right, especially in smaller units where diversity helps with curriculum breadth. Commented May 30, 2020 at 3:01
