How can I configure Windows on my laptop to require 2FA (preferably via authenticate) when connecting via Remote Desktop.

I have a workgroup login. So not a domain login. And not a Microsoft login. (Yes, very old school.)

  • @Peregrino69 Unfortunately no - that's for an AD login. I have a workgroup login. Commented Feb 25, 2023 at 0:30
  • Dang. All the options for standalone PCs seem to be commercial and rely on 3rd party authentication services. Nothing for RDP, RealVNC can be enabled for 2FA with Authy - the Android app is free. Maybe that'll help. FreeRADIUS with Google Authenticator PAM might be a workable solution too; this instruction is for Linux but it's also available also for Windows. Commented Feb 25, 2023 at 8:25

You can use DUO for RDP, it works for domain or local users, you can set it should only prompt when logging in via RDP or should always require auth.

once you make an account and install Duo on the computer, it requires the user an additional authentication. it can be a Phone call or push notification etc. to be able to access the computer

see here https://duo.com/docs/rdp

Care to provide specific installation and configuration information on your suggestion? Why use DUO instead of the built-in functionality? I personally am not interested in the information I am worried about those that are interested.
