Update: I never solved this specific problem. But I got what I really wanted eventually: My work stopped using laptops on their own windows domain; I got a wireless router with a USB 3 port and just plugged a 3tb external drive into it, and mapped it as a network drive on all my home PCs.– MGOwenCommented Jan 4, 2018 at 1:42
