VLC has its own codecs for most video formats, so this answer doesn't address the problem.– harrymcCommented Aug 8, 2014 at 9:58

Indeed, but if VLC can't play it MPC can, normally, and vice versa. As I'd mentioned above, the idea of my post was to discount codec problems before moving on. Start with the easy stuff, eh?– doggyTourettesCommented Aug 8, 2014 at 10:33

VLC codecs are extremely reliable. Also it's highly unlikely for such a serious problem to exist in more than one codec. The problem must be in some software that is common to all codecs and players, meaning the video driver or even Windows.– harrymcCommented Aug 8, 2014 at 10:49

Tried installing codecs as recommended, no improvement. MPC stops responding when I try to open a video in it. VLC shows the first frame, as usual.– zeelCommented Aug 8, 2014 at 18:08

Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox, and seeing if this helps the problem with online content?– doggyTourettesCommented Aug 12, 2014 at 16:29

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. windows-7), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
