  • VLC has its own codecs for most video formats, so this answer doesn't address the problem.

  • Indeed, but if VLC can't play it MPC can, normally, and vice versa. As I'd mentioned above, the idea of my post was to discount codec problems before moving on. Start with the easy stuff, eh? Commented Aug 8, 2014 at 10:33
  • VLC codecs are extremely reliable. Also it's highly unlikely for such a serious problem to exist in more than one codec. The problem must be in some software that is common to all codecs and players, meaning the video driver or even Windows.

  • Tried installing codecs as recommended, no improvement. MPC stops responding when I try to open a video in it. VLC shows the first frame, as usual.

  • Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox, and seeing if this helps the problem with online content? Commented Aug 12, 2014 at 16:29
