Sep 6, 2013 at 7:17 comment added mydoghasworms @50-3: I like your explanation about Windows not being able to access certain areas of RAM it believes is available. It would probably account for the slowness, as the OS probably has to keep retrying, getting errors in the process. It sounds like a very probable theory.
Sep 5, 2013 at 11:57 comment added Ramhound The limitation is hardware not software. So Windows wouldn't be able to detect the limit. As for why the system was able to POST more information on the motherboard would be required to answer that

Sep 5, 2013 at 8:29 comment added mydoghasworms Well, going down to 8GB memory has dramatically improved the performance of my machine, so even though I don't know the detail, this answer is good enough for me. Thanks!

Sep 5, 2013 at 7:21 comment added 50-3 It's a physical limitation on the hardware not on the OS so it's possible the windows keeps trying to assign information to the unusable segments and that's why it's failing
Sep 5, 2013 at 7:02 comment added mydoghasworms Mmm, that's interesting about the maximum memory. Thanks for pointing that out. I will uninstall the original 4GB memory and see if that helps, although Windows does recognize the 12GB of RAM correctly. Let me see if downgrading to 8GB will make it better.
Sep 5, 2013 at 6:37 comment added 50-3 He said he added it to a free slot and if it's like most HP laptops I pull apart they like to use 4GB sticks over 2x 2GB (Probably cheaper)
Sep 5, 2013 at 6:34 comment added Scott Chamberlain Most likely the bios does not recognize the new RAM at all so if he had 2x 2GB before and replaced one of them with the 8GB stick it now only sees the one 2GB stick.
