There isn't any technical reason a VB6 application shouldn't work on Windows 8. Have you tried simply to launch it using the Windows XP comapatability? If that doesn't work youre pretty much limited to a Virtual Machine.– RamhoundCommented Jul 1, 2013 at 19:15

There are many technical reasons. API calls, filing system changed, new frameworks, etc.......– nateCommented Jul 1, 2013 at 19:21

What API calls are not working, What filesystem changes have effected you, why cant you use the old framework?– Scott ChamberlainCommented Jul 1, 2013 at 19:38

Well you mentioned Virtual Machine, Compatibility Mode and Rewriting the App. I can only think of the Windows XP Mode which is actually not officially supported for Windows 8, but you could still run it, check this here: lifehacker.com/5965889/…– DevidCommented Jul 1, 2013 at 19:38

3Aren't there API calls to return paths like those? A well-written app wouldn't be using hard coded paths anyway.– KaranCommented Jul 1, 2013 at 20:29

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. windows-7), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
