Mar 16, 2013 at 14:28 comment added Christian You practically never see uncompressed tar files and there's a reason for that. tar uses very large chunks, meaning that you get a lot of padding at the end of files. To get rid of all these zeros, it almost always pays to just use gzip without giving it a second thought.
