I would argue that you do need this update, even if you never explicitly run internet explorer, because Windows uses the IE engine internally for rendering certain content. Allowing the system to stick with IE8 will eventually result in an unsecure system as IE8 is eventually reaches end of life and no longer receives patches. That said, IE8's support cycle is tied to Windows 7, so as a practical matter this shouldn't be an issue. Commented Apr 10, 2012 at 21:36

Well, I do have IE9 installed. According to the log, it's even a newer version than what the updater tries to install. Which is kind of the core of the problem. Commented Apr 10, 2012 at 21:45
  • Why don't you just review and ignore this update? It's an optional update. Maybe it's a bug from M$. or... "it's not a bug, it's a feature." :)

This is happening to me too, on FIVE Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machines in a test lab I started building today. I've manually installed Internet Explorer 9 on all of them, but Windows Update keeps telling me to install it, and failing because a more recent version is installed. This started happening about one hour ago, it wasn't happening before. Looks like Microsoft just released some buggy update today...

This is happening to me on Windows 7 32bit so I think it's more than just a 64bit problem.
