    My friend had a Magnavox CRT monitor that when set to 1280 x 1024 would die in a poof of smoke. He accidentally did this to a couple of monitors, fortunately it was still under warranty. Commented Jul 22, 2011 at 20:23

    @dmckee I would argue that this is not an exact duplicate because it's somewhat more general - not about melting the CPU specifically, but just about how software can cause any physical damage.
