If the slot maximum * number of slots is more than the motherboards' quoted maximum total then it is reasonable to assume that more will work and to try filling all slots with the maximum for that slot.

It really is likely a function of the motherboard chipset, which the board-maker merely uses, they don't generally create them. If you find out what your chipset is and go read up on it, you should have your answer. I find it easier to just try things.
