Microsoft has explained that they have not included anything other than exchange sync in the first release of office 2011 (Outlook v14).

They have stated that they will bring Calendar support with SP1 which will be a free release in Q1/Q2 of 2011 (looks like Q2 now!)

Meanwhile I suppose there's hope Google may make their own sync tool as they have for Windows - I think this is unlikely.

So for now, it's a case of waiting. ForFor what it's worth Thunderbird with Lightening and Google Cal plugin works pretty seamlessly.
