  • The only thing about bad hardware is that this is a virtual machine, therefore it couldn't be a hardware issue as there are hundreds of virtual machines on the physical hosts and mine is the only one with an issue. I will check the kernel logs and try to put a screenshot of it in the question.

  • If you have a size limit on your virtual hard disk, and it's full, Ubuntu will fail to write, just as shown above. You might check.

  • @David: The logs do show that Linux encountered a hardware problem, only the hardware is virtual. I find CarlF's hypothesis highly plausible. Commented Nov 5, 2010 at 18:18
