Still I don't know whether mounting that snapshot #1 as / was a mistake (made by the system installer or systemd's magic) or not.

In other words the subvolume mounted as / was also available as /.snapshots/1/snapshot/ . Removing the content of the latter was in practice like rm -rf --no-preserve-root / . Without using --no-preserve-root ! Nice horror story. +1.
