Aug 24, 2019 at 2:25 comment added realityChemist @Moab I ran the diagnostic software you linked. It shows all tests passed.
Aug 22, 2019 at 22:06 comment added fixer1234 If you weren't that thorough, I wouldn't rule out dried ink. But once you rule out dried ink, there isn't much related to the printhead that would cause the symptoms you describe. If there are electrical contacts between the printhead and its carriage, you could try cleaning those with an alcohol swab. But I would be surprised if a new printhead would help if the problem isn't dried ink. Before spending the money on one, I would try hard to prove that the problem is dried ink.
Aug 22, 2019 at 22:06 comment added fixer1234 If the printer sat unused for a very long time, there could be a build-up of dried ink inside the printhead that could take serious work to clean out. You might need to let it soak in an ink solvent like printhead cleaner or alcohol for hours, blot, and repeat until no more color comes out. The cavity behind the nozzles, or the ink feed tubes, could have an ink clot. Work on that by squirting cleaning fluid into the ports where the ink cartridges plug in during the soaking. If the problem is dried ink, that level of cleaning should clear at least some nozzles and let some ink through. (cont'd)
Aug 22, 2019 at 21:33 comment added realityChemist @fixer1234 I removed it and soaked it according to HP's instructions. The process removed a significant amount of ink from the print head (mostly black and cyan, from what I saw), but it made no difference in the end. Still zero color visibility.
Aug 22, 2019 at 21:25 comment added fixer1234 When you say you cleaned the printhead, did you remove it and soak it, or just ran the cleaning cycle? If all of the nozzles are caked with dried ink, the cleaning cycle won't make any difference (could make it worse), and you may not see any ink getting through when you print.
Aug 22, 2019 at 21:20 comment added realityChemist @fixer1234 I don't think a clogged print head is the explanation. I just cleaned the entire print head, and nothing has changed. Also, unlike the linked question, there is no visible trace of any of the three color inks. They're not just faded, they don't print at all.
Aug 22, 2019 at 21:13 comment added fixer1234 There are a few other potential problems involving the printhead, but it doesn't sound like those apply. It's possible that it's a printer firmware problem. I don't know of a good way to test that, unless HP has a utility to self-test, and a new printhead wouldn't fix that. Another possibility is a problem with the printer driver. You could try reinstalling that.
Aug 22, 2019 at 21:13 comment added fixer1234 There are a few things it could be. It's possible that all nozzles for colored ink are caked with dried ink (although it would be odd for 100% of those to be clogged but none of the black). You can try to clean that (see How do I clean just one color of my inkjet printhead?. If that's the problem and you clear even some of the nozzles, you will see some color and it will confirm the problem. With enough effort, you might clean it, or end up needing a new printhead, anyway. (cont'd)
