You do not need try_files to implement index . But if you do have a try_files statement, you need to add the $uri/ term, otherwise index will be disabled within that block.

Gotcha! I remember reading that the index directive works on URIs with trailing slashes, but I did not immediately understand that the actual serving was implemented by try_files . It makes sense. Thank you!
