Applied Geophysics

Applied Geophysics is the study of the Earth’s crust and near surface to achieve an economic aim, or making and interpreting measurements of physical properties of the earth to determine subsurface conditions usually with an economic objective (e.g. discovery of fuel or mineral deposits).

How Our Members are Applying Geophysics

  • Kennedy O. Doro

Assistant Professor, Environmental Geophysics, The University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio

I have a Ph.D. from the University of Tuebingen, Germany, and over 7 years of industry and research experience with positions at the University of Toronto, Canada, the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and Fugro Germany GmbH, Germany. I currently lead the Hydro- and Environmental Geophysics Research Group at the University of Toledo, Ohio. My research focuses on characterizing variations in soil and aquifer properties and monitoring transient hydrological and biogeochemical processes. I also use geophysical methods to image the shallow subsurface with applications for forensic, archaeological, and engineering investigations.

  • Andrew Long

    Chief Geoscientist

Andrew is Chief Geoscientist at PGS where he has worked for 25 years. He tries to work on a diverse spectrum of topics, with a passion for making digital transformation real and useful, exploiting links between acquisition survey design and seismic imaging and quantitative interpretation, and helping different geoscience disciplines understand each other as technology inevitably becomes more complex.

  • Holli Sims

VP/GM – Marine Seismic Teledyne Marine

I joined Western Geophysical in 1993 with the clear intent of forging a long-time career in applied geophysics. As a non-geoscientist, my path was littered with obstacles and challenges that only fueled me more to achieve the success that I desired. Early in my tenure, I became the first female offshore party manager and today I continue to break down barriers, recently becoming Teledyne Marine’s new VP here in Houston. Now, 30 years later, our industry continues to create more diverse opportunities for each of us and that clearly indicates that diversity, equity, and inclusion are key strengths for all organizations.

  • Rocio Bernal-Olaya

Assistant Professor at Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia

Ph.D. in Geology/ Assistant Professor at Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia. My current research aims to contribute to the understanding of the near-surface and its effect on the hydrogeological systems by integrating my geological and geophysical knowledge through the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of gravity, magnetic, near-surface geophysical methods, and MT data. As the present chair of the Latino-American regional advisory committee, I am looking for opportunities that challenge my technical skills and contribute to my growing business-society impact awareness
