“Longlegs,” an occult-tinged horror mystery about an FBI agent on the trail of a serial killer, opened to a phenomenal $22.6 million, easily outgrossing “Fly Me to the Moon,” a $100 million dollar rom-com featuring two of Hollywood’s brightest stars.
To pull off that upset, “Longlegs” got a lift from some sensational reviews, as well as a creepy performance by Nicolas Cage. The film’s opening weekend results are a record-breaking debut for Neon, the indie distributor that did an outstanding job of generating word-of-mouth for “Longlegs” thanks to a viral marketing campaign. It was one that saw the studio create a “90s-style website” highlighting the gruesome crimes of its antagonist, as well as a phone number that people could call to hear a demented message from Cage. It’s a page right out of the playbooks of previous cult hits like “The Blair Witch Project,” where it worked so well...

Guillermo del Toro is praising Osgood Perkins’ “Longlegs,” which scared up theaters over the weekend with a box office opening of over $22 million.
The horror film starring Maika Monroe as an FBI agent hunting Nicolas Cage — who plays a Satanic serial killer in prosthetics, white face powder, and lipstick — has become a viral hit. “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pinocchio” director Del Toro tweeted praise for the film on July 14.
“A great Oz Perkins film, 100 percent his vibe,” del Toro wrote. “It is comforting when a colleague fares well while staying faithful to the rhythms and motifs that have made his career. His metronome, his meticulous composition, and his uncanny sense of evil and impending doom.”
He continued, “It’s not horror as usual, or a thriller as usual. It bares the same preoccupations Oz has had from the start and his Cosmic dread. It is his vibe and signature and I...

Any mention of Rotten Tomatoes scores must include a brief explanation of how the scores work. First, a critic or outlet needs to be approved by Rotten Tomatoes before they are permitted to submit a review. Approval is based mostly on career longevity, volume of readership, or both. When a critic submits their review to Rotten Tomatoes, they choose for themselves whether the review counts as positive or negative ("fresh" or "rotten" by Rt's gauge). Different critics have different criteria as to what counts as positive or negative. Some, for instance, count a two-and-a-half star review as positive, and others count that as negative.
Rotten Tomatoes then calculates the percentage of positive reviews vs. negative reviews, coming up with an "approval rating." If at least 60% of the reviews are positive, the film is declared "fresh." 59% and below counts as "rotten."

Norman Mailer is the kind of writer people now tend to look at and appraise by saying, “He could never get away with that today.” And maybe that’s true. In Mailer’s case, however, the that they’re referring to could be any of the following things: his confrontational public statements; his misbehavior on talk shows; his ardent bad-boy meditations on subjects like sexuality and violence; his propensity to drink and drug and fight (he liked to literally butt heads with people at parties); and great lyrical swaths of his writing.
Forget what Mailer could or could not get away with today. He was feeding the fire of controversy and provocation 50 and 60 years ago; even then, he was considered a figure of singular outrage. Yet it was all part of his mission to make a difference in his time, to wake us all up — to what was happening in...

Jon Favreau swore off directing Marvel Cinematic Universe movies after "Iron Man 2," but Kevin Feige might want to consider whether it's worth trying to change his mind. Marvel Studios hasn't been having the best time in the past couple of years, what with a seemingly-constant barrage of MCU content making everyone uninterested in the superhero genre. Up until the studio's recent decision to dial back the amount of media it was putting out, we had too much of the MCU and it was getting ridiculous. But back in 2008, when Favreau was hired to direct the inaugural film in this now-gargantuan franchise, things looked very different.
"Iron Man" became the unlikely superhero film that changed Hollywood forever, establishing what would become the highest-grossing blockbuster franchise in cinema history. Without Favreau at the helm, however, there's every reason to think the McU's start wouldn't have been quite so auspicious. Not only...

While Netflix has a lot to answer for after forging a world in which Kevin Hart's Lift becomes the number one most-watched film in the world, it's also got a lot to be proud of. Arguably the best thing to happen as a result of Netflix's domination of the streaming game has been the way in which global audiences have been exposed to films outside of their native countries. It happened when Spanish historical drama "Society of the Snow" -- which did what no other portrayal of the Andes disaster could -- was released on the streamer. Prior to that, "Dark," the German version of "Stranger Things" also became a global hit.
Therefore, it's fair to say that Netflix is about more than pumping out an overwhelming deluge of middling "content." This week, the streamer proved its power to elevate smaller international films to major heights, by taking what...

In an era where audiences are peddled an onslaught of remakes, sequels, and requels, few attempts at adapting existing works really manage to stand out. That one of these precious few was immediately trashed by critics who didn’t understand it and mismanaged by a company that was too scared to court controversy, is a shame. That show, though you may not expect it, was none other than Paramount’s own “Heathers”, which aired in 2018.
The series, created by Jason Micallef, had the same basics as Daniel Waters and Michael Lehmann’s film of the same name, fixating on a group of students at Westerberg High School in Sherwood, Ohio, and the deeply messy politics and behavior that comes with that. It retained the main crew of three “mean-girls” Heathers, along with the blasé “good person” Veronica and her faux-tortured murderer love interest Jd.

Few cinematic moments can burn themselves into an audience’s psyche better than a good sex scene. They can shock, arouse, or simply capture human beauty in ways that cinema is uniquely positioned to do. Sex scenes don’t have to define the movies they appear in, but they’re often the parts you remember the most.
The nature of sex scenes are constantly evolving, as the prevalence of intimacy coordinators and increased concern for performers’ safety in Hollywood is hopefully making regrettable sex scenes a thing of the past. That has allowed sexy cinema to flourish, with plenty of tantalizing movies hitting the multiplex in recent years. With that in mind, it felt like the right time to compile some of the best additions to the sexy film canon.

The district attorney in Santa Fe, N.M., has affirmed her support for “Rust” prosecutor Kari Morrissey, after the manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin was dismissed Friday due to withheld evidence.
Morrissey remains in her role as the special prosecutor handling two cases against Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the “Rust” armorer who was convicted of manslaughter in March and is now serving an 18-month prison term.
Morrissey, a private attorney, was appointed by the D.A. in March 2023 to handle the criminal cases stemming from the fatal shooting of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Gutierrez Reed’s defense lawyer is seeking a new trial, claiming that evidence was also withheld in her case. Gutierrez Reed also faces an additional trial on a felony charge for bringing a gun into a bar.

It was a busy weekend at the box office, even though, if one were to look at the July 12 frame on the calendar at the beginning of the year, it wouldn't have seemed like it. "Despicable Me 4" was in its second weekend, one in which it topped the charts again and helped push the "Minions" franchise past $5 billion worldwide. Neon's horror movie "Longlegs" arrived and absolutely obliterated expectations with a $22.6 million opening, a record for the studio. On paper, it didn't seem like it would amount to much, but everything clicked. However, Apple and Sony's "Fly Me to the Moon" is the big question mark as the big budget, '60s-set rom-com had a somewhat soft debut. Yet, it's one of those situations where the opening weekend alone doesn't tell the whole story.

The number of streaming services competing for eyeballs and subscription dollars seems to grow every day. The crowded marketplace ensures that every streamer needs to find its own differentiating factor. Some compete for live sports rights, others give out free greeting cards, but only one managed to hire John Stamos.
Zeam, a new free streaming startup backed by Gray Television that focuses on offering local news, weather, sports, and entertainment content from local TV stations in a single app, has announced that Stamos is not only their company’s official spokesperson (he was the star of the streamer’s Super Bowl ad), he’s also now been given a fancy new title: Chief Innovation Officer.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stamos explained exactly what he’ll be doing with the company. It sounds like he’ll be taking founder Jack Perry to a whole lot of Hollywood parties.

After almost three years of drama, the “Rust” saga came to an abrupt end on Friday when Alec Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter trial was dismissed just two full days into a planned two weeks of proceedings.
The trial was dismissed with prejudice, meaning Baldwin’s criminal charges cannot be brought again. His chapter in this, at least on the criminal end of things, is over. In his first remarks over the weekend, Baldwin posted on his Instagram saying, “There are too many people who have supported me to thank just now. To all of you, you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness toward my family.”
But this will not be the last time you hear of “Rust” in the news. Here are a few lingering questions about what’s next for Baldwin, convicted armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, and even the “Rust” film itself.

Disney is investigating a hack of the entertainment company’s internal Slack channels.
A hacker group called Nullbulge claims to have obtained and leaked more than 1 terabyte of data from Disney’s internal Slack channels.
The “hacktivist” group claims to focus on “protecting artists’ rights and ensuring fair compensation for their work.” It shared screenshots of documents the group allegedly downloaded, posting to X about traffic and revenue data for Disneyland Paris and what seems to be a new streaming feature that would recommend Disney content based on what viewers previously watched, with a promise to dump the entire haul online. In the group’s latest blog post, Nullbulge claims that the full scope of leaked data includes details about unreleased projects, raw images and computer code.

Two of the best pop culture fixtures of the aughts briefly collided behind the scenes, according to "The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast." In a recent episode of the endlessly delightful Lonely Island retrospective project, host Meyers and "Saturday Night Live" digital short mainstays Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone shared a surprising behind-the-scenes moment from Schaffer's cult favorite comedy "Hot Rod," and it featured none other than prolific "Deadwood" pottymouth Al Swearengen.
In case you haven't rewatched "Hot Rod" lately, it's worth noting that "Deadwood" star Ian McShane plays the bullying stepfather to stuntman Rod (Samberg), and his antagonism is one of the major driving forces of the surreal and silly movie. "Hot Rod" came out in 2007, but it filmed a year earlier, apparently before "Deadwood" had wrapped filming on its third and final season. This is a big year for Julio Torres. The former “Saturday Night Live” writer (remember Ryan Gosling’s “Papyrus” sketch?) and “Los Espookys” co-creator stepped into the role of director and lead actor with his 2024 feature film debut, A24’s “Problemista.” His second comedy series for HBO, “Fantasmas” concluded its six-episode Season 1 last weekend.
Both projects are semi-autobiographical but represent two very different sides of its creator/star. When Torres was on the IndieWire Toolkit podcast, he explained that if his Alejandro character in “Problemista” captured his wide-eyed optimism as someone who emigrated from El Salvador, his turn as Julio in “Fantasmas” reveals his far more jaded side.
“‘Fantasmas,’ even though it remains joyful, it’s frustrated,” said Torres of the colorful, playful and surreal comedy series. “It feels like a sequel to [‘Problemista’], with achieving the quote-unquote ‘Dream.’ The idea of looking around you, even if you’re doing okay,...

By far the biggest of the May movie releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) is #1 in its initial week on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists.
This comes 60 days after its theatrical debut, with the longer-than-average window now typical for most Disney titles after aggressive home viewing placement during and right after Covid.
What’s surprising is how easily Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” (Focus) beat out Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” among other new releases. The former just passed the $20 million domestic gross mark over its fourth weekend. “Garfield” is at $91 million, four and a half times bigger, and part of a period where animated titles dominate both on screen and at home.
“The Bikeriders” was #2 most of the week at iTunes and #2 at Fandango for the full-week chart. It’s now #3 at iTunes, behind “Civil War” (A24), surging at a reduced price after significant success at $19.99 earlier.

It’s a beach read starring all of our favorite murder mystery staple actors — and it doesn’t get much better than that.
The upcoming Netflix series “The Perfect Couple” brings together alums from “Big Little Lies,” “Ripley,” and “The White Lotus” for yet another vacation gone awry. Nicole Kidman leads the novel adaptation, based on Elin Hilderbrand’s bestseller, as matriarch Greer Winbury whose son is getting married… only to find someone in the wedding party dead on the big day.
Jenna Lamia is the writer and showrunner, with Susanne Bier directing. Bier previously worked with Kidman in another novel adaptation “The Undoing” (2020), and also directed the series “The Night Manager” (2016) and “The First Lady” (2022), plus films “Brothers” (2004), “After the Wedding” (2006), “In a Better World” (2010), and “Bird Box” (2018).

It is not an exaggeration to say that Neon's buzzy horror flick "Longlegs" has instantly become one of the biggest box office surprises of the year. It simply cannot be overstated just how shocking it is that this particular movie did what it did in its first weekend in theaters. For a studio that has only ever had five movies make more than $10 million domestically at the box office during the entirety of their theatrical runs, a debut north of $20 million on opening weekend is downright staggering. Yet, that's precisely what happened.
Hailing from director Oz Perkins, "Longlegs" pulled in $22.6 million this past weekend domestically, absolutely obliterating even the most optimistic projections. It even blew past Apple and Sony's much flashier "Fly Me to the Moon," which opened to $10 million against a $100 million budget. To be perfectly clear, even if "Longlegs" had made one third of what it made,...

Armie Hammer says he wanted to be a drama teacher in the Cayman Islands, but the self-governing British (overseas) territory “refuses” to give him a work permit, he told Bill Maher. The government also wouldn’t give him a work permit to be a landscaper or a building manager.
The disgraced actor, who was accused of rape but ultimately cleared following a two-and-a-half-year investigation by the LAPD, guested Sunday on Maher’s “Club Random” podcast. The conversation was as random as the title suggests.
“I applied for a job to be a drama teacher. I applied for a job to be a landscaper. I applied for a job to be a building manager,” Hammer said at one point. “And the Cayman Islands refuses to give me work permits.”
Hammer told Maher that he’s basically broke and that he does not share in his family’s fortune.

Horror picture "Longlegs" is proving to be a surprising box office success. A lot of credit must go to indie studio Neon's marketing campaign, which was scary enough to get people paying attention, yet restrained enough to not give the whole movie away.
Starring Maika Monroe as FBI Agent Lee Harker, "Longlegs" follows the hunt for a serial killer, played by a well-disguised Nicolas Cage. Cage's killer character is mercifully kept at a distance or off-screen for most of the movie; the rare times we get an up-close look, it's like we're intruding on something devilish.
Director Osgood Perkins' previous films have felt a bit too empty for me. The procedural core of "Longlegs," though, gives the movie enough of a skeleton that I could appreciate Perkins' craftsmanship without it trying my patience. Is "Longlegs" the scariest movie ever? No, but it is the movie equivalent of a page-turner,...

Nineties New Queer Cinema icon Gregg Araki has not directed a feature since leaving Eva Green’s body frozen in the suburban snow globe of “White Bird in a Blizzard” in 2014. Since then, the DIY taboo buster has gone the way so many indie directors have to: by applying their personality to TV shows. In Araki’s case, that includes directing episodes of “Dahmer” and “American Gigolo.”
The iconoclastic Southern California filmmaker — known for “The Doom Generation” and “Mysterious Skin” and celebrated for his stylishly drawn stories of youthful sexual identity coming to bloom — also wrote and directed the 2019 series “Now Apocalypse.” Now, he’s teaming up with Karley Sciortino, the co-writer on that Starz show about sex and aliens in LA, for a new movie titled “I Want Your Sex.”

John Carney’s next musical comedy “Power Ballad,” starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, has sold to Lionsgate.
The film, described as an “uplifting and music-driven story,” follows a has-been wedding singer (Rudd) and younger rock star (Jonas) — and the song that comes between them. Jack Reynor, who appeared in Carney’s prior movies “Sing Street” and “Flora and Son,” is also in “Power Ballad.”
Lionsgate will handle the theatrical release in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of John’s movies, and I’ve had my eye on this particular film for some time,” said Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson. “It combines the best of John’s immense creative talents with a marketable concept and an incredible cast. I couldn’t be happier that he and the rest of the team have entrusted us with it.

This one has been floating out there in rumor-ville for some time, but it looks like it’s true. Filmmaker Josh Safdie’s next movie will be a film about professional ping pong player Marty Reisman and taking the leading role will be Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”).
The film, titled, “Marty Supreme” was written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, both of whom will be producers alongside Chalamet, Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas.

Jacques Rozier’s French New Wave legacy will now be available on the big screen for modern audiences.
Rozier directed five feature films and a slew of short films across his career. Rozier made his directorial debut in 1962 with “Adieu Philippine,” which was critically acclaimed by the iconic Cahiers du Cinéma. Rozier’s works are rarely shown in the U.S., and now courtesy of Film at Lincoln Center and Janus Films, a retrospective festival celebrating the auteur will take place at Flc from August 16 through August 22.
Titled “Jacques Rozier: Chronicler of Summer,” the program will premiere several new restorations of Rozier’s signature works, including 4K restorations of “Near Orouët” (1971) and “Maine-Océan Express” (1986).
Rozier was born in Paris in 1926 and was at the forefront of the French New Wave movement of the late 1950s and 1960s. He was considered one of the last living contemporaries of that time until...

One of the hot titles we were tracking for sales out of the Cannes Market has found a domestic home. “Power Ballad,” the new film from “Once” and “Sing Street” director John Carney, has been acquired by Lionsgate.
The film stars Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas and just wrapped shooting in Dublin, Ireland. Per the logline, the film focuses on a talented but past-his-prime wedding singer (Rudd) and a young rockstar (Jonas) who uses the wedding singer’s songwriting prowess to revitalize his own career. Sounds exactly like another heartwarming Carney musical comedy.
Lionsgate picked up rights in the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Ireland, and the studio intends to release it theatrically. Carney’s last film “Flora and Son” (2023) was limited to a streaming release after it was picked up by Apple.
No release date has been set.

With Timothée Chalamet next playing Bob Dylan, he’ll next be trading singing for ping pong slinging.
The actor, who is portraying Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” is in final negotiations to star in and produce Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” about a professional ping pong champ, A24 announced on Monday.
The movie is a fictionalized, original film written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, and official plot details are being kept under wraps.
Though as Variety is reporting, the film may be loosely inspired by the life of Marty Reisman, a ping pong champion who won 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002, and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships across his career. He also made history as the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport while competing in the United States National Hardbat Championship. He died in 2012.

Lee Pace’s “The Fall” is getting a 4K re-release courtesy of streaming platform Mubi.
The film, which was released in 2006, stars Pace as a hospital patient whose imagination inspires a globe-trotting tale. The official synopsis reads: In Los Angeles circa the 1920s, a little immigrant girl (Catinca Untaru) in a hospital recovering from a fall, strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man (Pace). He captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscape of her imagination.
The feature was filmed over 4 years in 20 different international locations. Tarsem Singh, known just as Tarsem, directed the film, which was his sophomore release after 2000’s “The Cell.” He later went on to helm “The Immortals” (2011), “Mirror Mirror” (2014), “Self/less” (2015), and Dear Jassi (2023). Tarsem also directed the 10-part mini-tv series “Emerald City.”

With a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 81, by all accounts, “The Fall Guy” was one of the most crowd-pleasing and entertaining films of the year, a mix of comedy, action, romance, and blockbuster-sized thrills. Our review of the film described it as “exuberant and kinetic” and a “bright and energetic action movie about the joy of making action movies.”
Directed by David Leitch, “The Fall Guy” stars Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (“Barbie,” “La La Land,” “Drive”) as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who is drafted back into service after a near-career ending accident when Tom Ryder (Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson; “Bullet Train”), the star of a mega-budget studio movie—being directed by Colt’s ex, Jody Moreno, played by Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer,” “A Quiet Place” films, “Sicario”)—goes missing.

It’s only been several days since the release of the “Captain America: Brave New World” teaser, but fans are already excited by what was shown. The film actually looks like it’s closer in tone to ‘The Winter Soldier’ and not some CGI mess like some of the recent Marvel films. And one of the most exciting aspects of the film is that there is still so much that’s unknown, including the identity of the villain played by Giancarlo Esposito.

People just love the Minions. With "Despicable Me 4" continuing to tear it up at the global box office, the franchise has crossed a major milestone, making a bit of history in the process. Illumination's signature series of films has now collectively crossed the $5 billion mark worldwide, making it the first animated franchise in history to do so. What's more, if things continue to go the way they're going, that number will be $6 billion and counting in just a few years.
"Despicable Me 4" once again topped the charts over the weekend, pulling in $44.6 million domestically in its second weekend. That represents just a 40% drop week-to-week following the sequel's record-setting opening weekend. Internationally, Gru and the Minions held strong as well, pulling in another $87.9 million from overseas markets. That puts the movie's running total at $437.8 million worldwide, with a lot of gas left in the tank. More importantly, it was...

Watching an actual barn burn to the ground while filming “Minari,” Lee Isaac Chung knew he wanted to make a disaster movie.
The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker behind that bittersweet and semiautobiographical portrait of South Korean immigrant life in rural Arkansas is now the director of “Twisters” — not a reboot, not a sequel, but an expansion of the world built (and destroyed) by the 1996 tornado blockbuster. Here, a team of science-loving storm chasers led by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos become rivals to a group of scrappier thriller seekers led by Glen Powell in this summer’s ultimate blockbuster spectacle — and its most forceful argument for the importance of the big-screen experience.

With all the problems going on throughout the world right now and even on our front door step, it feels at times indulgent or perhaps gauche to place the peril of Hollywood and the American entertainment industry on that list. It’s hard for people outside of the world of making film and television (or content as many would tell us to call it) to understand that the majority of the workforce behind this industry is not the uber-wealthy, but upper middle to working class like most others around the country. They’re technicians and craftspeople. Drivers and caterers. Even writers and actors, who took to the picket line last year to fight not for some exorbitant, unreasonable ask, but a livable wage, often surviving paycheck-to-paycheck. To understand and maybe even relate to the struggle they’re going through, the best metric to look at is one found in nearly everyone’s home nowadays: Streaming.

For all intents and purposes, Osgood Perkins’ “Longlegs” is Maika Monroe’s film. She’s in nearly every frame of the movie. But when people talk about how wild the film is, they’re probably going to start with Nicolas Cage’s performance as the title character, a serial killer with a very unique appearance. And you’d probably be surprised where Cage gathered his inspiration for Longlegs from.

NBC's "The Office" may now be considered one of the most beloved sitcoms in television history, but when the network first announced its plans to produce an Americanized version of the critically acclaimed BBC series, the reaction from fans of the original was far from joyous. Ricky Gervais and Stephan Merchant's "Office" was spiky and profane in a way that network shows simply couldn't be (thanks to their companies' Standards and Practice watchdogs). It was also narratively compact, running a mere two seasons and 14 episodes (counting the two-part Christmas special), which kept the show from getting stale. Most of all, it just felt kind of perfect (which Gervais proved when he tried to revive the series himself). A U.S. rendition stretched out over 20-plus episodes per season was bound to pale in comparison.

This post contains spoilers for "House of the Dragons."
If you thought "Game of Thrones," with its zombie armies, tortures, rapes, incest, maimings, and genocides, was cruel and bleak, "House of the Dragon" makes it all child's play. This goes back to the show's very first episode, which includes an extended stillbirth scene that set the tone for how relentlessly cruel this show was going to be. It also set the stage for a world and a time where life could easily end (or even just never begin). Although we haven't had as many characters to actually care about dying here like we had in "Game of Thrones" — there's no Ned or Rob Stark, whose deaths continue to be considered all-time greats — the fact of the matter is many of the characters who do die (or almost die) in "House of the Dragon" die much more horribly. This is as...

Dang, people are really into NATO speeches.
Per Nielsen, 24.2 million people watched President Joe Biden’s solo live news conference on Thursday, July 11. As first noted by the New York Times, that is nearly 5 million viewers more than the Oscars got in March (19.5 million) — and these were the strongest Academy Awards since Covid.
And remember: Thursday’s conference took place two days before the attempted assassination of his presidential-election opponent (again) Donald Trump.
The Biden press conference aired from approximately 7:30 p.m. Et until 8:30 p.m. Et. It was simulcast across eight TV networks: ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Univision, CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. The Academy Awards air (only) on ABC.
All told, Fox News drew the single-largest audience for Biden’s presser. Nearly 80 percent of all viewers (on any channel) were age 55 or older.

On August 29, 1997, Skynet AI began its war against humanity. And in the latest installment in the Terminator franchise, the upcoming Netflix anime series “Terminator Zero,” only one person might be able to stop the impending apocalypse.
Set in 2022, the eight-episode series will follow characters we have not yet met in the beloved franchise. According to a release, “Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for “House of the Dragon” Season 2, as well as major upcoming plot points from George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood.”
Like “Game of Thrones” before it, “House of the Dragon” is no stranger to canon departures from George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood.” From minor modifications to adding padding for episodes that were just a paragraph in the book to major adjustments that redirect character arcs, this series has it all — while preserving the spirit of a story that has captivated fans for years.
In Season 2, Episode 5, “Regent,” characters deal with the aftermath of what happened at Rook’s Rest, a major battle at that should have been an easy victory. Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) uses his army to draw out Rhaenys (Eve Best) and her dragon Meleys, planning to ambush them with Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) on Vhagar — but they didn’t...

It was a bit of a shock when the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes went to Sean Baker for his new film “Anora.” It’s not shocking that the film was a hit with critics, as Baker has always made movies that do well at festivals. However, it still surprised many. Could this be the year that Baker finally gets his trophies?

Armie Hammer joined Bill Maher on his “Club Random” podcast for a rare interview since a series of sexual misconduct and abuse allegations derailed his career.
The “Call Me by Your Name” and “The Social Network” star said he was grateful for the fallout because “had none of this gone on … my life would have kept going exactly as it was. And I know that that would ultimately only lead in one place, and that’s death.”
After sexual assault allegations surfaced against Hammer, the actor exited a number of film and television projects and was dropped by his publicist and agent at WME. The LAPD and L.A. District Attorney’s office investigated the claims in 2023 and brought no criminal charges against Hammer due to “insufficient evidence.” Hammer denies the allegations and holds that his often “intense” sexual relationships with the accusers were consensual.
When asked if he viewed the allegations,...

Sean Baker’s latest triumph is an Oscar frontrunner, and now finally the first trailer for “Anora” is here.
The highly-anticipated “Anora” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024, and proved “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” breakout Mikey Madison is an actress to watch this awards season. Madison plays an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn).
Vache Tovmaysa, Yura Borisov, and Baker’s frequent collaborator Karren Karagulian.
The feature was the first American film to win the Palme d’Or since Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life” in 2011.
Writer/director Baker previously helmed Oscar-nominated film “The Florida Project,” groundbreaking iPhone movie “Tangerine,” and Simon Rex’s career-best “Red Rocket,” which also centered on sex work.
“Anora” will be released by Neon, which handled the release of fellow Palme d’Or winners “Parasite,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “Anatomy of a Fall,...

The trailer for “Anora,” Sean Baker’ Palme d’Or-winning tale of the love story between a sex worker and the son of a Russian oligarch, is finally here.
The dramedy follows Anora (Mikey Madison), an Uzbek-American stripper whose boss often sets her up with Russian-speaking clients. One night, she meets Vanya (Mark Eidelstein), the wealthy young son of a Russian oligarch who pays to make her his girlfriend for the week. Unexpectedly, the two fall in love and elope — but the fairytale is threatened when Vanya’s parents find out.
“Anora” premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May to a 7.5-minute standing ovation and near universal acclaim. In Variety‘s review, chief film critic Peter Debruge called the movie a “rowdy Safdie-style movie about two cultures (Russian and American), two languages (Russian and English) and two currencies (money and sex).” At the Cannes closing ceremony, “Anora” won the festival’s...

If you enjoyed the hyper-violent 20-minute finale of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” and wondered if you could just have that for the whole movie, you have the movie of your dreams in Indian revenge actioner “Kill.” Relentless bloodletting is not novel to Bollywood cinema, but the volume & degree here might represent a dubious new milestone. As might the fact that “Kill” is one of the very few Indian films acquired for semi-wide release in North America, making its way to nearly 1000 screens.

The Sundance Institute has selected Lorena Luciano’s feature documentary “#NunsToo” for its 2024 Documentary Edit Intensive, which takes place from July 15-19 at the the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, north of Manhattan.
Normally, the Documentary Edit and Story Lab fellowship occurs in June at the Sundance Resort, but due to construction at the resort, the Sundance Institute has reimagined that Lab into the 2024 Intensive. This is not the first Sundance mentorship program to relocate. Earlier this year the Sundance Directors Lab took place in Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo., while the Institute’s Producers Lab moved to Ucross Wyoming.
Luciano, who is directing and editing the project, will attend the Intensive at the Jacob Burns Film Center with the film’s producer and cinematographer Filippo Piscopo. The week-long Documentary Edit Intensive is designed to provide support for one film team (director and editor fellows) at a critical point in post-production.

Tim Robbins is shutting down any “deranged” comparisons between his 1992 film “Bob Roberts” and the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Conspiracies surfaced on social media after Thomas Matthew Crooks killed a Trump rallygoer and tried to assassinate the former president, injuring two others in the crowd as well. Robbins weighed in after one theory claimed the shooting was arranged by convicted felon Trump to boost his campaign for re-election, much like the plot of Robbins’ political drama “Bob Roberts.”
“To anyone drawing a parallel between my film ‘Bob Roberts’ and the attempted assassination of Trump, let’s be clear. What happened yesterday was a real attempt on a presidential candidate’s life,” Robbins wrote. “Those that are denying the assassination attempt was real are truly in a deranged mindset. A human being was shot yesterday. Another killed. They may not be human beings that you agree with politically but for shame folks.

We’re gonna let you in on a little secret. Some of the best seasons of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” are not appearing on MTV or Paramount+ or screening. And while Season 16 was utterly superb and we stan the runways of some of the current “All Stars” queens, there has been some shockingly good “Drag Race” occurring outside of American television. International franchises such as “Drag Race France” (the new gold standard), “Drag Race Mexico” (an impressive second season), “Drag Race España” (consistently excellent), “Drag Race U.K.” (full of stars crossing over the Atlantic), and “Drag Race Phillippines” (the current definition of “that’s wild”) are just a few of the reasons why.

Tread carefully: This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "House of the Dragon" and spoilers for the book, "Fire & Blood."
If the ending of "House of the Dragon" season 2, episode 5, titled "Regent," is anything to go by, the next stage of the Dance of the Dragons is about to kick into gear, and it may forever alter the balance of power in the Seven Kingdoms. Those who've found themselves wishing for "more action" throughout this deliberately-paced season 2 so far could end up regretting those words -- especially since, as we've seen, adding more dragons into the mix tends to come with dire results. Unfortunately, the main issue facing Team Black is an alarming lack of firepower to compete with the might of the one-eyed Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his fearsome beast Vhagar, particularly following the loss of Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) and her dragon Meleys in the Battle at Rook's Rest.
