Apple’s WWDC 2016 event: 7 things to expect

Apple’s annual developer conference, WWDC, is scheduled for June 13-17 this year. And although the Cupertino based tech giant has been facing some tough times lately, the brand Apple remains as strong as it has always been.

Apple’s latest iPhones have been facing comparatively weaker demand, as they offer increasingly lesser features as compared to similarly priced Android devices. Analyst reports have predicted that Apple might even end up among the top five worst performing smartphone brands of the fiscal year 2016, as global iPhone shipments fall short of expected estimates.

The company has released several new products such as the new iPad Pro and the smaller-but-powerful iPhone SE recently, and this year’s iPhone 7 is rumoured to come with quite some features. And as rumours keep on building up, it’s obvious to wonder exactly what does Apple have in store for everyone.

Here are a few things we can expect from Apple, at its Worldwide Developers Conference 2016.
iOS 10

iOS 10

WWDC 2016 will see Apple revealing the next version of its iOS mobile operating system.

Although not much is known at this point about the next-gen mobile OS, it’s expected that the App Store will undergo a considerable overhaul.

Paid search results are also a possibility, and will allow developers to have their apps ranked higher in search results. But perhaps the most interesting of them all is that iOS 10 might come with the ability to remove Apple’s default apps and set third-party apps as default clients.
MacOS

MacOS

Apple is expected to get rid of the ‘X’ from its desktop OS’ name and rename it to just ‘macOS.’ The change is rumoured to be aimed at making things more homogeneous when compared to Apple’s other OS’ such as iOS and watchOS.

As far as features go, the biggest one is that Siri could be finally coming to the Mac.

Considering how Microsoft’s Windows 10 features extensive Cortana integration, this move seems even more likely.
Refreshed MacBook Pro line-up

The MacBook Pro series of laptops is also believed to undergo a pretty great refresh. The laptops will supposedly come in two sizes – 13 inch and 15 inch, and will be powered by the latest Intel Skylake processors.

Even more interesting is the fact that the refreshed MacBook line-up is expected to have new GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA, with superior graphical processing capabilities.
Apple Watch 2

The next iteration of Apple’s smartwatch could come with cellular network connectivity. This makes sense as the current Apple Watch is too dependent on a connected iPhone for even basic functionality.

Cellular functionality would also make the second gen Apple Watch a more ‘self-contained’ gadget. Apple recently announced that all watchOS apps submitted to the App Store after June 01, 2016 will have to be native applications, further supporting the speculation.
More Apple Pay features

More Apple Pay features

Apple’s mobile payment platform Apple Pay might get a couple of new features as well. The company is supposed to be working on adding person-to-person payments for Apple Pay.

This could facilitate transfer of money by just tapping two phones together. Other improvements like loyalty points and ATM withdrawls could be coming as well.
Security boost for iCloud services

Security boost for iCloud services

If you use iCloud for stashing all your important files and data, it’s time to be happy. It’s been rumoured that Apple is working on strengthening encryption for its cloud service.

Reports have also suggested that the company is trying to bring its entire iCloud infrastructure in-house, aiming to improve overall reliability of the service.

Apple TV improvements

It’s been suggested for quite a while that Apple has been working on its own streaming service to take on the likes of Netflix.

This could come as some sort of update to the tvOS, the operating system that powers Apple TV. There’s even a possibility of Apple making the Apple TV more exciting for developers by allowing more gaming options.
