Abstract
Examined data for all psychiatric evaluations done in the emergency room of a hospital over an 8-wk period to determine the volume of police referrals and the characteristics and dispositions of the police cases relative to all other psychiatric evaluations. Findings show that 7.1% of the 196 evaluations were police referrals, and these Ss were younger (mean age 33.8 yrs vs 36.1 yrs) and more often female than the rest of the caseload. Results also indicate that police referrals were not as often violent nor were they as mentally disordered as is thought. Sources of conflict between the police and mental health professionals are discussed.(9 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
