Method The original study group consisted of all patients (n= 189) who entered the
commitment process through the University of Oregon Psychiatric Crisis Unit from January
through June, 1976. For the purposes of the current study, all voluntary patients (n= 95)
admitted to the same in-patient service during the same six-month period were identified as
a comparison group. For this comparison group, it was not possible to apply prospective
diagnostic criteria originally developed in the first study. For the 95 patients
