Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program (CPBSP) releases first annual report for 2023
The Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program (CPBSP), created in collaboration with UC Berkeley SafeTREC and California Walks, has released its first annual report for the 2023 calendar year. CPBSP works with communities at disproportionate risk for road traffic injuries to address the safety needs of people underserved by traditional transportation resources — including but not limited to older adults, people with lower socioeconomic status, people with disabilities, people who use mobility devices, and immigrant and refugee populations.
The CPBSP is comprised of the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training Program (CPBST), which conducts workshops and traffic analyses to advance communities' pedestrian and bicycle safety goals through the Safe Systems approach, and Comunidades Activas y Segura (CAyS, Active and Safe Communities), which guides large Spanish-speaking populations through culturally-sensitive active transportation planning.
Report Highlights
In 2023, the CPBSP conducted workshops and trainings in 15 communities across California to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety, including seven CPBST workshops, three CAyS workshops, and five follow-up trainings for cities that previously completed a CPBSP workshop. Follow-up visits included technical assistance on how to raise funds for pedestrian and bicycle safety programs, how to develop effective media communications on road safety, and how to create policies and programs for increasing access to green spaces.
The CPBSP also released four research briefs and one white paper, including Towards a Better Understanding of Best Implementation Practice for the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training Program, a case study of three former CPBST sites on how to better meet the needs of program participants. During the year, multiple former CPBST sites submitted competitive grant proposals for safety infrastructure improvements, including Fresno Woodward Park, Kern County Mount Vernon, and the Modesto Airport neighborhood.
Jill Cooper, former co-director of SafeTREC and former CPBSP grant director, was recognized with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 2023 Public Service Award for her pioneering efforts with CPBST and CAyS.
