    Works for Me

    Works for Me
i have an older DELL M-90 laptop. In '07 it was state of the art and kind of expensive. i've upgraded it a few times already and I wanted USB 3.0 speed for a 2 gig WD sata HD. i reviewed many of the express cards available. Seems like there was some kind of issue with all of them. The Iogear seemed like the best solution for me. It has worked perfectly in the 2 weeks i have installed it. The website is very helpful and there is a technician who even answers the phone. She answered my question for me. I just followed the directions on the website: 1. install the version 1.0 driver 1st, 2. Insert the card, 3. Update the firmware & reboot, 4. Uninstall the 1.0 driver and install the newer 2.0 driver. 5. reboot, I installed the power supply; but it maybe optional. My WD external HD is reading at 90+ MB/sec. Not bad. I think if my notebook were newer, the read and write speed would be much faster. I'm satisfied, though. Maybe next year I'll upgrade my laptop. Right now it meets my needs.

I have Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. The unit specs declared total compatibility. I inserted the disc, followed the installation instructions, inserted the card. Windows came back with an error window...then froze. Went to the website...downloaded the latest drivers and installed them...no help...the card is not even acknowledged. Customer service seems to be manned by drones reading a list of troubleshooting wizard questions...no help. I will return the card and not buy IOGEAR products again.

Happy note...bought an off-brand card installed and worked without a hitch!!

The description didn't mention anything about Windows operating systems and I made the mistake of assuming it would work on my laptop. It wasn't until I contacted iogear that I found that bit of information
out. They discontinued this item which is probably why it's only $12.99 and comparable devices are so much more expensive. However, it does work as an extra couple powered USB ports that I needed anyway so I just may keep it. I haven't tested its speed yet so there's a chance it just might work (although their device support told me to use it at my own risk). Here's hoping...

    Updated:
Dang, it works but not at usb 3.0 speeds, just 2.0. But I'm going to keep it anyway since I really like having the extra usb ports.

Just received this and tested it. At first glace everything seems fine. I wasn't aware that it required an external power supply, but looking now I can see the spot for the power in the photos (though they could have made it more obvious). Luckily, for my purposes this isn't a problem.
What was a problem, was that the driver CD was missing (they gave me an empty sleeve) and this device requires this to work. The drivers available on the IOGEAR site were only upgrades (which didn't work without having the original drivers installed first), so I had to resort to a third-party site to find the drivers. Not a horrible problem, but not the best.
But as I said, with those minor problems aside, the ports seem to work fine and it helps me make use of the otherwise wasted potential of the ExpressCard port on my laptop.

I purchased the USB 3.0 ExpressCard to upgrade my Lenovo ThinkPad, which only had USB 2.0 when I purchased it 18 months ago. I had been backing up using an external Toshiba 500 GB 2.5" hard drive (5400 RPM 8MB cache, SATA rev 2.6) installed in an Oyen Digital MiniPro (2.5" hard drive enclosure with USB 3.0 & eSATA 6 Gbps) using the eSATA port. I wanted an additional high speed port and chose the USB 3.0 card. When I installed it, the backup operation worked flawlessly for a couple of days. But shortly thereafter, my backups would always fail halfway through the backup. I don't have any technical explanation for the cause of the failure, but I reconnected the drive to the eSATA port and have had no problems. Since I purchased the USB 3.0 card to provide fast speed backups and have the eSATA port available for other devices, I was forced to return the product as unusable and not dependable.

I've had IOGEAR products over several years and have had no complaints. So I can't say that I either had a defective unit or a product with a design problem. Considering that there are users who are using this product successfully, I have to give IOGEAR the benefit of the doubt and consider the possibility of a problem with my system.

The IOGear SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ExpressCard GEU302 works great and even comes with an external power adapter to power USB 3.0 portable drives like WD's 'My Passport' external drive (the drive will not function with the addition power adapter). It maybe a little more expensive than other expresscards, but as an engineer it is a quality product that works and comes with an external power adapter and a 3 year warranty. It was hard finding a well known brand-name LOW profile USB 3.0 ExpressCard. IOGear has come through for me again with a well made product with an easy and trouble-free installation software. I say all this since my research has revealed other products failed easily or had a difficult driver installation, but this product has work exceptionally well. NOTE: I have only been able to achieve a 5x improvement over USB 2.0 (USB 3.0 states a 10x improvement), but this could be due to limitations of the expresscard and PCIe buses along with the bridge chipset used on my HP HDX18 notebook with a T9900 Dual Core @ 3.06 GHz.

I got burned by non-compatibility with this product. This product doesn't work with Mac. Only PC, and the listing doesn't specify. Only after the product arrives, the install disk is for Windows products, and I visit the Manufacturer's website do I discover this. Since my computer has the correct port, I think it was reasonable to expect compatibility or accuracy in the listing.
