Read Fine Print on "insurance" carefully
you must return the lock to show it was breached, you must pay $10 for 1 year of protection, 15 for 2 and $20 for 3 years. You must register within 15 days of purchasing the lock by mail.Beyond that, the lock seems very solid. I had a challenge finding a place to mount mine but finally settled on the seat post. Not ideal but I get for the size of the lock it is what you should expect.I am really disappointed about the "insurance" as this was the main reason I bought this. I will not be sending them more money as the odds of having the lock left around for your convenience if your bike is stolen seems very low to me. At least the last bike I had there was no evidence left behind at all. Also, I did not get a light up key with mine. Not sure why that is in the description.

First impression about the lock is that it is well built. The U bar fits into the locking mechanism snugly, with no wiggle room a thief could exploit. The 13mm U bar is actually quite large, I don't even think you could get a pair of bolt cutters around the bar, let alone manage to cut it. Compared to other U locks the Kryptolok is one of the larger ones, and should easily allow you to put the frame and a wheel through most bike racks. The mounting mechanism is a little complex, but if you don't mind the trouble it will work. I just throw the lock in my backpack, it's easier in my opinion.

Some people complain about the locking mechanism being fragile and locking up. I would say the mechanism is picky, but not fragile. The entire locking mechanism is housed in the straight half of the lock, and is actually heavier than the U bar. You have to put the key snugly in the lock and turn it, and when the lock sticks I just back it up, set the key again, and it has always opened on the second try. Another nice feature is that Kryptonite will send you a free set of replacement keys if you loose yours and have the serial number from the side of the keys. No one has tried to steal my bike yet, but I feel safe with this lock on my bike. For added security, and because I have quick release wheels, I bought an inexpensive 8 foot cable which I loop through my wheels. The only real downside of this lock is its weight, which is even to much to comfortably wear the lock on a belt, as some people do. But again, the lock is larger than average, and that weight it what gives it strength.

I recently bought this lock after my previous lock had given out after two years of all seasons use. My expectation was that this lock would be higher quality, more resistant to rust damage, and easily mountable on my Trek bike. The first two expectations are generally met. The plastic is molded onto the lock well which prevents much of the metal from being accessible to the cold and damp. The U part of the lock is high quality as is the base. The only quibble I have is the sheath that covers the place where the key enters. It rotates around to keep that part out of the elements, however mine does not lock into place and often rotates open on its own. This results in the feature being useless and cumbersome since it is in the way with no functionality. My largest issue with the item is the mount. While the latching mechanism works wells, I've had a lot of trouble getting it to attach to my bike and remain secure since the lock itself is very sturdy and somewhat heavy. The design also prevents it from being completely in-line with the bar that you attach the mount to resulting in my legs occasionally brushing the lock while biking. On the whole I'm happy with the lock but wish that these last two pieces were better designed to make their functionality improved.

This is a good, solid lock. I think its a bit more than I need around here with my bike, but its nice to know its secure. Previously, I had a cheap Masterlock combo lock that was much thinner and never had a problem, but i dont have a high-theft bike. I bought this to replace that one, which fell apart after 6-7 years of heavy use.

I think its the thickest of any lock I've owned, which is 4-6. After using it a few times daily for a month, I haven't had a problem with freezing, which some people have complained of. What will happen sometimes, though, is the locking mechanism will get misaligned from being bounced around riding, causing the key to not go in all the way, making the lock not open. This is not a big deal, I've had other similar locks that did this, too, though, so its probably a relatively common problem with this type of lock. I'm not sure why they cant put in a spring or something so it doesn't move on its own, but like I said, its no big deal. If you're having this type of problem, try 'jiggling' it while applying gentle inward pressure.

The main reason I gave it four stars instead of five is the method for attaching it to the bike, which as other reviewers said, is poorly thought out. I don't think its as bad as others make it out to be, but its bad enough that its a problem for most people. A nylon strap is just about the worst thing you could use for this purpose. While many people said slides around, the only time i had that problem was after a few hard hits (like running into the back of a van to avoid some stupid kids playing in the street) that really jostled it. I reset it, though, and havent had a problem with it wobbling since. It has to be attached very tightly, though. The way I did this was by looping the strap (with the rubber on it) around and through the plastic base, then pulling back the other way as tightly as I could. While holding that with one hand, I used the other to snap on the top half of the holder, which I then carefully held in place with the first hand. When snapped on properly, it'll hold the strap in place, so you just have to hold it once its on. I then used the second hand to screw that on. Its more of a PITA than it needs to/should be, but if you do it carefully, it won't slip around, at least for a while.

The other complaint about the attachment method is that the lock sticks out. This is easily fixed, however, and the instructions even say this. The screw on the attachment piece on the lock itself can be loosened, and then you can rotate it around and re-tighten it a position so that it stays within the bike frame when attached.

All in all, a good solid lock with a few minor design flaws.

(Update: If I could lower it to 3 1/2 stars I would. The lock mount came loose again. Its still a good lock, so I think 3 stars would be too low, but they really need to do something about this cheap mount, it doesn't work well at all. Luckily, I was able to position it so that the other end of the lock fits inside the mount from my previous lock, so that holds it from wobbling and I haven't had problems with that since. But if you don't have something like that, youre probably going to have to keep reseating the mount every few weeks or so as it works itself loose from the bouncing around or riding. It's a shame, because this would be a five star lock if it had a decent mount that would hold it in place properly.)

This lock is nice and solid. I have had no problems with the key sticking, and the key feels solid enough to me. It isn't the strongest lock compared to the Evolution or NY series, but I don't plan on leaving my bike at the bus 'el' station overnight.

The only complaints that I have are: 1) the bracket is a little large, which decreases mounting options and 2) the lock is maybe a little too big for what I need it for. However, if I ever need to lock to a parking meter or something else that thick, I can.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solide mais difficile a utiliser
Reviewed in France on September 29, 2012

4.0 out of 5 stars Neuer Schließmechanismus!
Reviewed in Germany on August 4, 2012
SCHLIESSMECHANISMUS:
