OpenGeoSci

Now fully integrated with the GSW platform, OpenGeoSci is a free, public map based toolset that allows users to search for cross sections, charts, tables, figures, and data from GeoScienceWorld publications. The goal of OpenGeoSci is to further aid researchers in discovery of relevant valuable assets for academic research.

To see search results related to the area of the map you have zoomed into, click Limit search results to map bounds.

How to Use the Map Tools

After performing a search, results can be viewed on a map.

Results that have GeoRef bounding coordinates display on a map view of search results. From there the results can be faceted with all GSW facets and can be further limited by zooming in on the map and clicking the limit results to map boundary.

The cluster circles on the map represent dense areas of the map that have multiple publications. Those publications are represented by a numeric value inside the cluster. Selecting a cluster circle will zoom in on that area of the map. At each level of the map, pins represent content covering an area that is relevant to that scale. So, as one zooms in, the articles represented by pins will be more narrow in geographic scope.

Browse the Figures

Users can discover figure assets associated with GSW journals and books via the same search tools. Each result with figures displays the first 3 so they can be easily scanned. Clicking view all displays the figures for all the results. Note these figures are a medium thumbnail size and can be accessed in full size by clicking through to the article for those with access.

About the Coordinate Metadata

Geolocation coordinates are supplied in metadata provided by AGI's GeoRef database. GeoRef uses polygons to approximate an asset’s geographic location. Coordinates for data assets are derived from the metadata of the article from which they are sourced. Any single may have multiple sets of assigned coordinates.

Access

The tools are free to access and use. Full-text articles and higher resolution images will be available via links to the GSW content for subscribers and purchasers. Data from Open Access and free articles is also available.
