ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan basketball stars and current Orlando Magic teammates Moritz Wagner and Franz Wagner are less than a month away from heading to the XXXIII Olympic Games in Paris with the German national basketball team.

Moritz makes his second Olympic appearance after playing in the 2021 Toyko Games. Coming off the bench, he averaged 11 points and 2.8 rebounds helping Germany reach the quarterfinal.

In 2024, the 12-team tournament will feature three groupings of four qualifying teams. Preliminary round games will be played at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Villeneuve-d'Ascq before moving to the Bercy Arena in Paris for bracket play.

The top eight teams will be seeded for tournament play and begin their medal quest with the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The semifinals will be played on Thursday, Aug. 8 and conclude with the medal round on Saturday, Aug. 10.

Germany will be part of Group B with host France, Japan and Brazil. Group A will feature Australia, Canada, Greece and Spain, with Group C comprised of Puerto Rico, Serbia, South Sudan and the United States.

The Wagners open against Japan on Saturday (July 27) at 7:30 a.m. EDT. On Tuesday (July 30), Germany faces Brazil at 3 p.m. EDT and concludes Group B play Friday (Aug. 2) taking on host France at 3 p.m. EDT.

The Wagner brothers were instrumental in helping Germany secure its Olympic berth following a historic gold medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. After going 8-0 and reaching its first World Cup championship game, the Germans capped off their run with a thrilling 83-77 victory over Serbia. Awarded the Player of the Game, Franz finished the championship game with 19 points and seven rebounds and was clutch going 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. Moritz had eight points and four rebounds.

Franz spent two seasons with the Wolverines before electing to leave early for the NBA and was the eighth overall pick by the Orlando Magic. He started 55 consecutive games, scoring 661 points (12 ppg), grabbing 334 rebounds (6.1 rpg), and racking up 33 double-figure games (six 20+) and four double-doubles. The 2021 All-Big Ten second team honoree helped U-M to the program's 15th Big Ten title after a career season with 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and three assists per game.

During his three years with the Maize and Blue, Moritz started 77 of 107 games, helping the Wolverines to an 82-33 record, back-to-back Big Ten Tournament titles (2017 and 2018), and a trip to 2018 Final Four and national title game. He finished with 1,114 points and was 16 rebounds away from joining U-M's 500-rebound club (484).

Germany is playing in its seventh Olympic Games (1936, '72, '84, '92, 2008, '21 and '24). The Germans' best finish was seventh (3-5) during the 1992 Games in Barcelona.
