LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Former University of Michigan ice hockey player Quinn Hughes won the Norris Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL's top defenseman, at the 2024 National Hockey League Awards Show on Thursday night (June 27) in Las Vegas.

Five years removed from Ann Arbor, the captain of the Vancouver Canucks led all defensemen in the NHL with 92 points, including 75 assists -- 17 of which were primary power-play helpers. He averaged 24:41 minutes of ice time per game, playing in all 82 games as the Canucks won the Pacific Division and finished second in the Western Conference. Only six defensemen in NHL history have had more assists in a single season. Hughes was on the ice for 57.7 percent of his team's scoring chances, finishing a +38 as the organization won 50-plus games for the first time since 2011.

In just five seasons, Hughes already ranks second all-time in Canucks scoring history for defensemen with 333 points in 365 games.

The 100th Wolverine to make his NHL debut, Hughes began his career in March 2019 after the completion of his sophomore season at Michigan. He is the first Michigan Wolverine to win the Norris Trophy. He also was nominated in 2020 for the Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the league's top rookie.

A first team All-American at Michigan, Hughes was a finalist for the 2019 Hobey Baker Award and a two-time finalist for the Big Ten Player of the Year. In 69 career games, he registered 62 points on 10 goals and 52 assists and led the league's defensemen in scoring as a sophomore with 33 points in 32 games.

Quinn's brother, Luke Hughes, was a finalist for the Calder this season in his debut season with the New Jersey Devils. The trophy was awarded to Conor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks.
