The tool I use the most when I would otherwise have writer's block is this: I write down everything I DO know about the project or assignment. Sometimes it's little more than my name, the idea or pitch, and maybe placeholders for "hed and dek." It is a super effective trick at getting started when I am stuck. The Vouchsafe project for digital identities in Scottish public services has moved into its beta phase with the team beginning to explain its operation to the public. The idea of using social vouching in the verification of digital identities has won support on both sides of the border, but seems to be moving much quicker in Scotland. It has obviously been higher on the list of priorities, but it's also notable that the Scottish Government has allowed the small team at Vouchsafe, previously known as Interrobang, really run with the project. https://lnkd.in/epWwq66P #scotland #digitalidentity #publicservices #socialvouching

Climate Journalism Award 2024 Deadline 5 July 2024 The Award promotes innovative and creative storytelling that highlights the fight against climate change and values high-quality reporting on climate and environmental issues. The Award is returning for its second edition and will grant a prize of €2,400 per each of five distinct categories. Investigating political pressure, disinformation, and greenwashing are key tasks for journalists and media professionals in fighting threats to climate action. This Award offers the chance to honour their important efforts. The Award ceremony will take place at the News Impact Summit in Copenhagen on 10 October 2024. The Award is managed by the European Journalism Centre in partnership with the Google News Initiative. Each project must fit in one of the five following categories: >>Data-driven visualisation: data-driven approaches that report on climate change, effectively visualising complex climate narratives. >>Fighting climate misinformation Climate stories that debunk myths and counter disinformation campaigns surrounding climate change and the climate crisis. >>Pinpoint award for investigations: Investigative reporting that holds those in power accountable for their actions and their impact on climate change and environmental issues. >>Storytelling & solutions: Solutions-focused storytelling methods for communicating climate change stories. >>Emerging talent: Innovative climate reporting produced by journalists and newsrooms with less than three years of experience. Journalists or teams are required to meet the following criteria: >>The submitted piece must address one or more topics related to climate change and its effects; >>The submitted piece must have been published in or on a European-based media outlet; >>The submitted piece must have been published in the past 12 months (1 June 2023 - 31 May 2024); >>The submitted piece must be in print, online, or multi-platform storytelling formats, but cannot include standalone videos or podcasts; >>You need to be available to travel to Copenhagen on 10 October 2024. When science loses its integrity, we stop relying on it which is dangerous. But perhaps as a society, we have also substituted research as an alternative for thinking for ourselves. Anyone with a scientific background knows statistics can be manipulated, yet we fall into such ridiculous mindsets as to believe proteins made in labs are identical and as healthy as food, or epigenetics in seed manipulations are outside the reasonable scope of an assessment of effects on plant/human health. It’s nonsense, but universities, VCs, and industry are counting on our willful ignorance to be able to exploit and make more money. When a member of the IPCC and UNIL prof at a “Theory of Knowledge” event tells 200 17-18 yr olds that going to Burger King to eat an Impossible Burger instead of eating meat will save the world, and there is ZERO debate allowed because she’s an “expert” and she claims we can trust her, it becomes evident that it isn’t educational institutions that will fix it because they too have been “captured” by the inability to allow debate to discern good science from bad. In every field, post truth = more money. We’re worshipping what have become false gods. We need to teach kids at home what integrity of thought means.

I'm deeply thinking about the value of mainstream media in Lesotho when media organisation we expect credible news from are feeding and regenerating all this rubbish disinformation and misinformation spewed on social media by these "media" movements... whats the point of having MNN Centre For Investigative Journalism Pascalinah Kabi Newsday Media Ls Lesotho Tribune exposing social injustices and corruption in Lesotho yet nothing happens? Whats the point of Journalism in Lesotho when there is a subtle censorship that is not spoke about against media organisations that speak the truth or even try to challenge the government or anything that is peculiar in the country? What is the point of media and it's work when the people have lost trust in anything and everything that we are doing? These questions are buzzing in my head because of the provoking debates at the Africa Media Perspectives 2024 conference Stellenbosch, Western Cape 📸 Tiisetso Manoko

This week's blog is on one of the most sobering reports I've read in years on the economic damages that could result from escalating climate impacts. Have been getting all kinds of grief from climate sceptics over on X this week for reporting on this story, but the lack of imagination it takes to dismiss these risks out of hand remains absolutely mind-blowing. The risks are self-evidently real, the cascade effect failed harvests and extreme weather can have on economic growth and geopolitical stability is obvious, and the worst case scenarios are genuinely terrifying. https://lnkd.in/eY8ZW2Ry

Perplexity's Pages really nails down an issue that is central why journalism is a difficult business. No one can own the facts. Nor should they be able to. If a journalist spends months digging into a subject, anyone else is free to immediately summarize and report on the facts of what they said. And "anyone" includes people using artificial intelligence. Perplexity arguably steps over the lines at times. Is the use of images scarped from sources ok? Honestly, no, I think they could get sued for that. Is the copy sometimes too close to the source material? Honestly, probably so, though also I don't think in a way that's, like, legally actionable. But this is re-arranging chairs on the deck of the Titanic. The specific issues with Perplexity are solvable. The fundamental problem is the same. No one can, or should, own the facts. This is a big problem—for journalism as a business, at least. But I'm not doom and gloom, because it's also the same problem journalism has encountered since at least the dawn of the Internet. We still have journalism, as well as many other new forms of expression we didn't have a few decades ago. https://lnkd.in/gfRua9uv
