Wonderful film.
The greatest painter and prophet of any period, The French sculptor Auguste Rodin said, "Compare me with Rembrandt! What sacrilege! With Rembrandt, the colossus of Art! We should prostrate ourselves before Rembrandt and never compare anyone with him!"

A hidden gem of a movie from 30's...
Truly enjoyed watching this hidden gem with a wonderful performance of Laughton portraying Rembrandt. "Vanity of vanities; all is vanity"...

Director's skill
Laughton was great and his classical training shows, Korda was a vastly under rated director.

Great biopic of Rembracht, the Dutch (not Flemish!) painter
This is a marvellous biopic, very convincing in its portrayal of a streetwise Rembrandt who has to overcome great personal tragegy, in a role by Laughton that must be one of his very best. Rembrandt had to deal with authorities & adversity throughout his life, and maybe it is due to his strong-willed a bit eccentric personality that he kept on working with great passion that was never compromised. Korda pushed all the right buttons to make the famed painter come to life for us, spectators; as well as his social and historical background, the canvas on which Korda painted 'his' Rembrandt.
One objection though: on this website Rembrandt is presented as a 'Flemish' painter. He is not Flemish. Flemish people live in Flandria, which is part of Belgium. Rembrandt was born in Leiden (Leyden) and worked in Amsterdam, which makes him a 100% Dutch painter. Leyden and Amsterdam are two cities in the part of The Netherlands that is (and was in Rembrandt's lifetime) called 'Holland'.
